Newport County vs Wrexham Preview, Tips & Stats

Wrexham make the trip to Rodney Parade to take on Newport County this Saturday. Wrexham are looking to reel in top of the league Stockport whereas Newport are aiming to get as far away from the relegation zone as possible.

Newport County currently sit 17th in League Two after 27 games. The Exiles have nine wins, seven draws and 11 losses, leaving them on 34 points, 11 points ahead of the relegation zone but also five points from the top half of the table.

In their last five games in all competitions, Newport have two wins and three draws.

Chris Long opened the scoring for Crewe Alexandra just three minutes into the second half, but Will Evans equalised for Newport with 30 minutes to go. Despite Newport having 19 shots and Crewe having 23 shots, neither team could find another goal and had to settle for a 1 - 1 draw. It was another 1 - 1 draw for Newport, this time against Sutton United. Shane McLoughlin thought he had won it for Newport with his goal with ten minutes to go. However, a goal from Tope Fadahunsi in the 90th minute grabbed a 1 - 1 draw for Sutton.

Newport picked up another 1 - 1 draw in the Third Round of the FA Cup against Eastleigh. Following the red card to Eastleigh’s George James Barbosa Langston in the first half, James Clarke scored ten minutes into the second half. However, with a penalty Chris Maguire equalised for Eastleigh to force the replay. Seb Palmer-Houlden scored the only goal of the game in the 93rd minute to give Newport the 1 - 0 win over Doncaster.

The last time out for Newport was in the FA Cup Third Round Replays against Eastleigh. Aaron Wildig, James Clarke and Evans all scored in the 3 - 1 win for Newport.

Wrexham, on the other hand, currently sit second in League Two. In 26 games, Wrexham have 15 wins, seven draws and four losses which leaves them on 52 points, just two points behind Stockport.

In their last five games in all competitions, Wrexham have four wins and one loss.

James McClean scored the only goal of the game in the 13th minute to give Wrexham the 1 - 0 win over Swindon despite having James Jones sent off in the second half. Walsall opened the scoring in the first half through Jack Earing but Paul Mullin equalised with a penalty before halftime. However, Isaac Hutchinson and Taylor Allen both scored in the second half for a 3 - 1 win for Walsall.

Despite the goal in the first minute by Kian Spence, Steven Fletcher grabbed a hat-trick, with two of those goals coming in the added time of the first half, and was joined on the scoresheet by Mullin in the 4 - 1 win over Barrow. In the Third Round of the FA Cup, Wrexham took on Shrewsbury. Thomas O’Connor scored the only goal of the game in the second half to give Wrexham the 1 - 0 win.

The most recent outing for Wrexham was against Wimbledon. Fletcher and Mullin were both on the scoresheet in the 2 - 0 win.

Newport and Wrexham have met 23 times in their histories, with the first meeting coming back in 1958. Not much separates the two sides, with Newport having nine wins and Wrexham having eight wins, with the other six games ending in a draw.
