Tranmere vs Newport Prediction Tips & Stats

Prenton Park is the venue for a mid-table clash in League Two as Tranmere Rovers are set to host Newport County on Saturday afternoon.

It seems as though it will be another year in League Two for the hosts next year as they currently occupy 13th place in the league. Rovers are currently eight points adrift of the playoff places and nineteen points above the relegation zone.

Tranmere’s form has been inconsistent throughout the season none more so than in the past few weeks. Rovers recorded impressive victories over Stevenage and Salford, who are both currently in the playoff places but failed to follow this up by failing to beat Hartlepool and losing to Gillingham.

Last time out, Tranmere were frustratingly beaten by Gillingham, a side who sit well below them in the table. Shaun Williams’ first-half header was followed by a late Conor Masterson strike to secure all three points for the Gills.

Newport county also look to be destined for another year in the 4th division next time round as they sit below Tranmere in 18th place in the table. The Exiles are currently eleven points above the relegation zone and sixteen points beneath the playoff places.

The Welsh side come into this game on the back of a poor run of results that has seen them go without a win in their last five league games where they have recorded three draws and two defeats.

Newport featured in midweek League Two action as they welcomed AFC Wimbledon to Rodney Parade on Tuesday evening. Wimbledon arrived in South Wales without a win in their last eight matches, having lost the previous four, while County had just one win in their last seven matches.

It was the visitors who took an early lead as Ali Al-Hamadi was allowed far too much time to control Chris Gunter's cross and slot past Joe Day. The Exiles managed to find an equaliser in the 69th minute as Henry Charsley expertly finished and the points were shared on the evening.

Newport have dominated this fixture in recent years, having won four of the last five meetings in the Football League. This is often a tight matchup, with four of the last five meetings having been decided by a single goal. Following a 1-0 away victory in 2021/22, Newport are looking to win consecutive Football league visits for the first time.

Newport came out on top of a tight affair when these sides met in the reverse fixture at the beginning of the campaign. An own goal from Aaron Lewis put Tranmere in the driving seat but a quick first-half turnaround courtesy of goals from Moriah-Welsh and Bogle gave the Exiles all three points.

Tranmere are narrowly favoured at the bookies ahead of this weekend and are currently priced @ 11/8, whilst an away victory for Newport is priced @ 19/10 and a draw is @ 11/5. Kane Hemmings is the favourite to score in the game @ 5/2, whilst it is Offrande Zanzala who is the favourite to score for Newport @11/4.

          Tranmere Team News

Paul Lewis and Brad Walker recently picked up injuries for Tranmere, and Micky Mellon confirmed that they were long-term, while Kane Hemmings and Kieron Morris will face late fitness tests.

          Newport Team News

On the injury front, Declan Drysdale will be pushing for a place in the travelling squad as returned to light training last week continuing his road to recovery following a knee injury sustained in January. Meanwhile, the club are awaiting the scan results on Offrande Zanzala's shoulder injury that kept him out of the trips to Salford and Grimsby.
