Wrexham vs Newport County Preview, Tips & Stats

Wrexham host Newport County in a weekend with big implications in both halves of the table. The hosts will be looking for a win to close in on automatic promotion whereas Newport need a win to increase the gap between themselves and the relegation zone.

Wrexham currently sit third in League Two after 21 games. The Red Dragons have 11 wins, seven draws and three losses, leaving them on 40 points, equal with second place Barrow and six points behind top of the league Stockport.

In their last five games in all competitions, Wrexham have three wins, one draw and one loss.

A Joel Senior own goal opened the scoring for Wrexham against Morecambe in the fifth minute, and goals from Jacob Mendy and James Jones, along with a hat-trick from Paul Mullin gave Wrexham the dominant 6 - 0 win. Andy Cannon and Elliot Lee gave Wrexham the 2 - 0 lead early on, but Dean Cornelius got Harrogate Town on the scoresheet before halftime. However, Anthony O’Connor scored early in the second half to grab a 2 - 2 draw for Harrogate.

In the Second round of the FA Cup, Wrexham hosted Yeovil Town. Ollie Palmer, Cannon and Sam Dalby all scored in the 3 - 0 win for Wrexham. In the Second round of the Football League Trophy Wrexham faced Burton Albion. Deji Oshilaja opened the scoring for Burton in the first minute and Burton’s lead was doubled within two minutes by Mark Helm, though Dalby did also get an early goal for Wrexham in the fifth minute. Ryan Sweeney added to Burton’s lead in the second half and Jordan Davies’ late goal was not enough as Burton won 3 - 2.

The last time out for Wrexham was against Colchester. An early goal from Elliot Lee and an own goal from Zach Mitchell gave ten-man Wrexham, who had George Evans sent off in the first half, the 2 -1 win.

Newport, on the other hand, sit all the way down in 17th. In 22 games, Newport have seven wins, five draws and ten losses which leaves them on 26 points. This also leaves Newport just six points above the relegation zone.

In their last five games in all competitions, Newport have two wins, two draws and one loss.

Michael Mellon opened the scoring for Morecambe, but goals from Will Evans and Seb Palmer-Houlden gave Newport the 2 - 1 win. In the Second round of the FA Cup, Newport hosted Barnet. Shane McLoughlin drew first blood for Newport in the first half but Danny Collinge scored late on to grab a 1 - 1 draw and force a replay.

Back in League Two, Newport took on Tranmere. Evans gave Newport an early lead, but goals from Kieron Morris and Connor Jennings in the second half gave Tranmere the 2 - 1 win. In the replay of the Second round, Newport beat Barnet this time out. Lewis Payne, Omar Bogle, Palmer-Houlden all scored and along with an own goal from Collinge gave Newport the 4 - 1 win.
