In what is likely to be one of the biggest matches of the season, leaders Forest Green Rovers can take a huge leap towards the League Two title, should they beat third-place Northampton Town on Saturday afternoon. The hosts currently lie 11 points behind the visitors, and cannot allow the gap to grow any more, should they wish to catch up.
After dropping out of the third tier last season, Northampton initially struggled during their return to League Two, dropping as low as 14th in the early part of the campaign. A run of 10 matches with just one defeat between mid-October and the end of the year had seen the Cobblers claw themselves back up the table, but two league defeats to kick off 2022 has damaged their credentials. Still in the mix for an automatic spot, Northampton will no doubt look to go one better than the last time they were promoted to League One in 2019/20 via the playoffs.
Surprisingly, most of the Cobblers wobbles in recent weeks have come in the comfort of their own home, with Northampton boasting just two wins from their previous five matches at Sixfields. Eyeing up the potential to capitalise on that will be high-flyers Forest Green, who stretched their lead at the top to nine points with a midweek victory over Colchester United.
Having lost two playoff semi-finals since earning promotion to League Two in 2017/18, Forest Green look set to achieve their goal of a first promotion to the third tier this season. No side has scored more goals than the Green, whilst only second-placed Tranmere Rovers have conceded fewer. Looking to back up their victory over Northampton from earlier in the campaign, Forest Green would achieve their first-ever league double over the Cobblers with a victory on Saturday.
Dominating from the off this season, Forest Green should take three points once again.
