Friday night football action sees one of the biggest games of the season go down at Burnley's Turf Moor as two of the relegation-sitting teams battle it out where only Luton Town have a chance to get out of the bottom three.
Burnley are sitting with only 11 points after 20 games in the Premier League so far, having only secured three wins and racked up just 20 goals - this sees the Clarets as the second-lowest goalscoring side behind Sheffield United. One of those wins, however, was over Luton at Kenilworth Road back in October, as Lyle Foster got the ball rolling with a finish in the first half. Elijah Adebayo must have thought he'd stolen a point when he netted in the 84th minute of the game, but a goal from Jacob Bruun Larsen just minutes later secured all three points for the Clarets.
Since then, Burnley have gone on to lose seven games in a row to Everton, Arsenal, Crystal Palace, Chelsea, West Ham United, Bournemouth and even relegation-fighting Brentford. Vincent Kompany's men only returned to the win column with a 5-0 thrashing over last-placed Sheffield United, as Jay Rodriguez, Larsen, Zeki Amdouni, Lucas Koleosho and Josh Brownhill all netted as part of five different goalscorers getting on the scoresheet.
Further losses to Everton, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Liverpool and Aston Villa have meant only a win over Fulham and a draw with Brighton & Hove Albion was all the club had to boast of throughout December. Worse yet, Kompany's side went on to lose in their third round FA Cup tie with a 1-0 loss away to Tottenham Hotspur.
This is, however, undoubtedly Burnley's biggest game of the season so far, as a loss to Luton would mean a gap of seven points on them in 18th potentially a gap of eight points on Everton, should the Toffees win their game against Aston Villa at Goodison Park.
As for Luton, they can jump above the Toffees with a win here, as Everton don't play their game against Villa until Sunday afternoon - this would mean it's the first time out of the bottom three for almost two months for the Hatters and for two days at least.
Regardless, because of Everton's 10-point deduction, there are going to be a few chances for Luton to keep their head above water this season. They did, however, draw their third round FA Cup battle with Bolton Wanderers of League One at Kenilworth Road last weekend to further add more misery to their season and another game to come on Tuesday as well.
The Hatters did have a positive December, however, beating Newcastle United at home and Sheffield United at Bramall Lane. They were also very fortunate to lose to Arsenal with basically the last kick of the game and the champions Manchester City after leading 1-0.
