Burnley vs Sheffield United Prediction, Tips & Stats

Burnley and Sheffield United will clash in what is no doubt the biggest game of the season for the two teams sitting in the relegation zone with their terrible runs of form continuing each week in 2023/24.

The Clarets are now bottom of the table and have replaced the Blades in doing so after recent results, and in truth, a loss for either side here is likely to push them to be the clear favourites for top spot in the relegation odds.

Sheffield United have only made their hopes of relegation even bleaker in the past week as they were stunned by fellow bottom half side Bournemouth last time out. The club went 2-0 down inside the first half and later made it 3-0, while Oli McBurnie managed to score at least one goal in a 3-1 loss with a finish with basically the last kick of the game.

This was the 10th loss already for the Blades in the Premier League and they have also now let in the most goals after 13 games with 34 going in. Eight of those came in one fixture when they were thrashed 8-0 by Newcastle United, while they have also suffered a 5-0 loss away to Arsenal this campaign. The only win on the board for Paul Heckingbottom's side was in a 2-1 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers, which in itself needed a finish from Oliver Norwood from the spot in the 100th minute of the game. Cameron Archer also bagged that day.

As for Burnley, it's been their worst-ever start to a Premier League season with them winning only one match and losing the most games (11) across the campaign. Vincent Kompany's men have only managed to get a win over fellow strugglers Luton Town this season, beating them 2-1 at Kenilworth Road a few weeks back.

Kompany's side have also let in an alarming 32 goals and they have gone on to lose all seven games since that win away to Luton at the start of October, as Chelsea, Brentford, Bournemouth, Crystal Palace, Arsenal and West Ham United have all defeated them in the league. A further loss came away to Everton in the EFL Cup round of 16.

In truth, it's a game that could go either way given the form, but being at home, we expect Burnley to finally get a home victory this season.

          Burnley team news

Burnley are relatively OK on the injury front and they could see Jack Cork return to action within the next two weeks. Arijanet Muric seems to have passed a late fitness test and could play here, while Lyle Foster will not play for the foreseeable future.

          Sheffield United team news

Chris Basham and John Egan give Heckingbottom some injury headaches in defence, as the former is out for the season and the latter remains sidelined until January. Tom Davies will also be out until mid-January alongside Daniel Jebbison, while Rhian Brewster and Rhys Norrington-Davies are out for this one.
