Liverpool vs AFC Bournemouth Prediction

Liverpool will host Bournemouth at Anfield on Friday in the opening game of the 2025-26 Premier League season. After a successful title defence effort last season, Liverpool will be aiming to begin their new campaign positively on home soil. The Reds have an excellent recent record against Bournemouth, winning five of the last six league meetings, and are unbeaten in their last 17 home league matches. This consistency at Anfield backs them as strong favourites for this match.

Liverpool’s squad is in fairly good shape ahead of the game. Florian Wirtz will almost certainly make his league debut for Liverpool, while new signing Hugo Ekitike will hope to make it two goals in two for his new club after scoring at Wembley at the weekend.

Liverpool lost on penalties to Crystal Palace in the Community Shield on Sunday afternoon and will be hoping for an immediate rebound here. The Reds looked very good in patches but also looked fairly vulnerable in transitions, something that they'll hope is not a sign of an incoming theme.

Bournemouth come into the match on the back of a ninth-place finish last season, a fine campaign under manager Andoni Iraola. They had a relatively solid away record, winning seven and drawing seven of their 19 Premier League away matches last season. However, they're going to be a very different team this season having lost 75% of last season's back four, with Dean Huijsen, Illya Zabarnyi and Milos Kerkez all departing the club. Goalkeeper Dorde Petrovic and left-back Adrien Truffert have joined, but the Cherries are still looking light compared to last season.

Bournemouth have a terrible record against Liverpool (12 defeats in their last 13 meetings) and have never win at Anfield in their history. They'll no doubt look to exploit transitions and limit the attack of Mohamed Salah, Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike, but that job is far from easy. The last three head-to-head matchups between the two have produced three wins for Liverpool with an aggregate scoreline of 9-0, and while Bournemouth won't be pushovers, they're unlikely to reverse the trend of results.

Liverpool 3-1 Bournemouth

Team News

Liverpool Team News:

The Reds will be without Ryan Gravenberch, who is unavailable through suspension. On top of that, Conor Bradley, Joe Gomez and Stefan Bajcetic are all on the sidelines with injuries.

Alexis Mac Allister could take the place of Curtis Jones in the starting XI following the defeat to Crystal Palace at the weekend, in what is likely to be the only change to the starting XI.

Predicted lineup: Alisson; Frimpong, Konate, Van Dijk, Kerkez; Szoboszlai, Mac Allister; Salah, Wirtz, Gakpo; Ekitike.

Bournemouth Team News:

The Cherries come into this game unable to call on the services of key midfielders in Lewis Cook and Ryan Christie, both of whom are out injured. Luis Sinisterra and Enes Unal both remain out injured too.

Justin Kluivert is also a major doubt, and even if he's fit enough to make the matchday squad, it feels unlikely he'll be part of the starting lineup.

Predicted lineup: Petrovic; Araujo, Hill, Senesi, Truffert; Adams, Scott; Semenyo, Tavernier, Outtara; Evanilson.

Recent Form/Form Guide

Liverpool:

Liverpool have already played in one competitive game this season, losing to Crystal Palace on penalties on Sunday in the Community Shield. The Reds took the lead through an excellent individual goal by Hugo Ekitike before being pegged back by a Jean-Philippe Mateta penalty, following a foul by Virgil van Dijk in the box. Liverpool retook the lead through a fortuitous goal by Jeremie Frimpong, but a second half goal by Ismaila Sarr prevented the Reds from emerging victorious.

Liverpool won most games in pre-season, claiming victories against Preston (3-1), Stoke (5-0), Yokohama FM (3-1), and Athletic Bilbao in a double header (4-1 & 3-2). Arne Slot's side also lost 2-4 to AC Milan.

Bournemouth:

Bournemouth have enjoyed a mixed preseason, beating Hibernian (2-1) and Everton (3-0), drawing with Real Sociedad in a double header (1-1 & 0-0), and losing to Manchester United (4-1) and West Ham (2-0).

Bournemouth finished last season decently well, beating Arsenal (2-1) and Leicester City (2-0), drawing with Manchester United (1-1), and losing to Aston Villa (0-1) and Manchester City (3-1).
