Manchester United vs Brighton Prediction

The late comeback win against Southampton should provide enough momentum for Ruben Amorim's side, but they will need to make sure there is no lack of performance or drive as they take on Brighton. The Red Devils are now unbeaten in their last three games following the win against Southampton.

Brighton have only won once in their last five away league games, and in context, that was against Ipswich Town. The Seagulls have not kept a clean sheet against Manchester United in the previous three meetings between the two sides. Amad Diallo will be brimming with confidence after scoring four goals in his last two games – Manchester United 2-1 Brighton

Manchester United vs Brighton: Preview & Prediction

Manchester United host Brighton in the Premier League, with both sides looking to build on their momentum following important victories last time out.

Date: 19/01/25

Kick-off time: 14:00

Venue: Old Trafford

It has been a dreadful season for Manchester United so far, but they will be hoping to build on four points in their last two games. A comeback win against Southampton and a draw at Liverpool keeps them in the bottom half, but they are now just four points behind Fulham in 10th. The victory over the Saints was their first in five league games and first at Old Trafford since December 1st.

After a strong start to the campaign, it has been a bit of a struggle for Brighton of late. However, they picked up a crucial victory in their last game at Ipswich, snapping an eight-game winless streak. Despite their poor form, they managed to remain in the top half, currently sitting in ninth. They were able to record four consecutive draws prior to the midweek game which allowed them to keep pace. They are seven points adrift of fourth place Newcastle.

There should be goals in this game, with both sides taking confidence from their recent games. United, in particular, have struggled at the back with a vulnerable defence. They have not kept a clean sheet in their last 11 games in all competitions. Brighton will be confident in taking advantage of this, having scored at least two goals in three of their last four games in all competitions.

Brighton’s downturn in form coincided with the absence of Danny Welbeck, but their striker and top scorer returned from the bench in midweek. He leads the club with six goals in 14 appearances and will likely trouble a poor backline if involved. The Seagulls also have other dangerous threats such as Joao Pedro and Kaoru Mitoma, who scored last time out.

Amad Diallo is the bright spot in the United side right now, as he netted a hat-trick against Southampton to salvage three points. It doubles his tally to six goals, overtaking Bruno Fernandes who had led with four. Brighton kept a clean sheet on Thursday, but it was their first on the road in six games. It means there is a strong chance for both sides to get on the scoresheet.

These two teams have met 10 times in the Premier League since 2020. There has been nothing to split the pair with five wins apiece. However, Brighton have been the superior side in recent years. They have been winners of four of the last five games, including the reverse fixture earlier this season. The Seagulls won 2-1 at home with Joao Pedro netting a 95th minute winner. The corresponding game last season was also a win for Brighton, 3-1 the final result.

Team News

Manchester United

Diogo Dalot is eligible to return from suspension after his sending off against Arsenal in the FA Cup. Mason Mount and Victor Lindelof are both out long-term, while Luke Shaw is expected to return at the end of this month. Ruben Amorim should have no new injuries to contend with.

Brighton

Brighton were boosted with the return of Danny Welbeck in midweek, and he could be reinstated to the starting lineup this weekend. Evan Ferguson could also be involved following an ankle injury. James Milner and Ferdi Kadioglu are expected back in February.

Form Guide

Manchester United:

In their last five games, Man United have won one, drawn two and lost two. It has been an underwhelming stretch for United though they picked up a victory in their most recent game. Despite falling behind before the break, they were 3-1 winners against Southampton, with a late Amad Diallo hat-trick saving them from embarrassment.

This followed a 1-1 draw at Arsenal in the FA Cup third round, a tie which they won 5-3 on penalties. They took the lead through Bruno Fernandes, but the Gunners responded shortly after the Red Devils were reduced to 10 men. United were able to hang on through extra-time for the shootout.

A huge result at Anfield saw United pick up a point in a 2-2 draw against Liverpool. Both sides took the lead before Amad equalised with 10 minutes to go. It was a good response to two consecutive 2-0 defeats. Newcastle were winners at Old Trafford with Alexander Isak and Joelinton on the scoresheet. The first game was a 2-0 win for Wolves at Molineux.

Brighton:

In their last five games, Brighton have won two and drawn three. It has been a difficult stretch for the Seagulls but they have seen an upturn in form in recent days. This run started with a goalless draw at home to Brentford. They created many chances but were unable to make a breakthrough.

A trip to Aston Villa followed. Brighton were held to another 2-2 draw in which they took the lead through Simon Adingra. Villa turned it around but Tariq Lamptey salvaged a point with less than 10 minutes to go. A third consecutive draw came at home to Arsenal. They held their visitors to a 1-1 draw after a controversial penalty from Joao Pedro cancelled out Ethan Nwaneri’s opener.

FA Cup action saw them advance to the fourth round with a 4-0 win at Norwich. Georginio Rutter (x2), Julio Enciso and Solly March were the goalscorers. Last time out they travelled to face Ipswich, where they won 2-0, thanks to goals from Kaoru Mitoma and Rutter.
