Aston Villa head to St. James' Park on opening weekend in the Premier League with Newcastle United aiming to build on their best season in the past 20 years from last campaign with Champions League football around the corner.
Newcastle finished fourth last time out, and this was the highest the club have finished this century in what was Eddie Howe's first full campaign with the club. This was also another summer under the ownership of the Saudi-backed owners, and the signings have kept coming in for arguably the most promising side in world football right now.
The Magpies also had a near-faultless preseason campaign, drawing with only Chelsea and Aston Villa. Alongside this, the club managed to defeat Gateshead, Rangers and Brighton & Hove Albion before victories over Fiorentina and Villarreal back at St. James' Park.
Like Newcastle, Villa have made more positive moves in the summer transfer window and only grown Unai Emery's credentials with the Midlands outfit even more. During preseason, however, Emery's side only beat Valencia, Lazio and Fulham, as they drew with Walsall, Newcastle and Brentford.
