15th-place Espanyol goes head-to-head with 13th-place Girona in what promises to be a feisty Catalan Derby.

Something that epitomises Espanyol’s away record was their 4-1 defeat at Girona in the last head-to-head clash between these two sides back in late November. During that game, Girona raced into a four goal lead after just 27 minutes as Bryan Gil, Bojan Miovski (2) and Ladislav Krejci all got on the scoresheet, while Javi Puado pulled back a second half consolation goal for Espanyol.
Espanyol have earned 27 points in 25 La Liga matches this campaign, winning seven, drawing six and losing 12 times - it must be noted, that they have managed to earn just five points away from home all campaign, which is the second-worst away record in the division, with bottom of the table Real Valladolid being the only side worse off.
The hosts are solely focussing on consolidating their position in La Liga this campaign, as they sit just three points above 18th-place Valencia. Espanyol were beaten 2-0 away at Barbastro in the Second Round of the Copa del Rey.
Their position is understandable, as for context, Espanyol were only promoted back to La Liga last season as they finished fourth in the Spanish Segunda, but, beat Real Oviedo 2-1 on aggregate in the promotion play-offs.
Girona will be disappointed with their campaign thus far, as they have not come close to reaching last season’s heights that saw them earn an unexpected third-place finish with 81 points. Instead, they sit 13th with 32 points from 26 matches, six points adrift of an in-form Real Betis side that occupies the final European qualification place.
Their Copa del Rey campaign was disastrous as they crashed out of that competition in the Second Round following a 4-3 penalty shootout defeat at UD Logrones after a 0-0 draw; while in the Champions League, they earned just three points from eight matches, having beaten Slovan Bratislava 2-0 on matchday three, while losing to PSG (1-0), Feyenoord (3-2), PSV (4-0), Sturm Graz (1-0), Liverpool (1-0), AC Milan (1-0) and Arsenal (2-1).
It must be mentioned that a large part of this season’s regression can be attributed to losing the likes of Yan Couto, Eric Garcia, Savinho and Artem Dovbyk last summer while struggling to find sufficient replacements.
