PSV meet Real Sociedad in the Europa League on Thursday as both sides are looking to start with maximum points from their opening game. The Dutch side head into this season without the services of Donyell Malen who departed for Borussia Dortmund.
PSV qualified for the competition after being eliminated via the Champions League route by Benfica on a 2-1 aggregate score. Having finished second in the Eredivisie last season behind Champions AFC Ajax, PSV have started this season brilliantly as they currently occupy the top spot in the Dutch league. Four wins from their opening four games, have given Eindhoven a very solid platform to build upon as they try to break the Ajax stronghold on the league.
PSV have been very active in the opening stages of the season having already played 11 games so far this season and they have won nine of them with their only defeat coming against Benfica in the Champions League. Remarkably the goals have been spread with nine players contributing to the 14 they have scored in the league so far this season.
Real Sociedad qualified for the Europa League via their league position as they finished fifth in La Liga. The Spanish outfit will spend their second consecutive season in the competition having featured last year. They finished second in their group and were eliminated in the round of 32 by Manchester United.
Sociedad, just like their hosts, have started the season very well considering. Having won three of their opening four games in La Liga, they currently sit in the Champions League places in which they occupied for the majority of last season.Alexander Isak is yet to get off the mark but Mikel Oyarzabal has contributed all but two of Sociedad’s six La Liga goals this season.
