Rangers embark on their fourth season in European Football under Steven Gerrard as they host Olympique Lyonnais in the first game of the Europa League. Rangers did reach the final of this competition under the old format of the UEFA Cup in 2008 but lost against Zenit St. Petersburg.
The Gers have begun this season in a similar vein to how they finished the season previous as league champions, having won four of their first five games in the league. Kemar Roofe and Alfredo Morelos have started the season in fine form, having notched up four goals and three goals respectively between the pair.
The Scottish Champions have already featured in European competition. Based on their league performance last time out, they qualified for the Champions League third qualifying round. They were beaten 4-2 on aggregate by Swedish side Malmo, which means Rangers are in the Europa League.
Last season Rangers were also competing in the Europa League but were eliminated by Slavia Prague in a game which was marred by a racial incident.
Olympique Lyonnais are currently 7th in Ligue 1 after five games. The French side have won two out of their opening five games, drawing two and losing the other one. Having scored eight and conceding eight, Lyon’s issues remain in defence.
Against Clermont Foot, they squandered a 3-1 lead to concede two goals in the final ten minutes. 50% of their goals have been conceded in the second half of games. Lyon qualified for the Europa League via their league position, after finishing fifth in Ligue 1.
This was after they spent the majority of the season potentially in the title hunt. Moussa Dembele is key to this game. The former Celtic man is Lyon’s top scorer after five games with four games.
