Borussia Dortmund vs. Chelsea Prediction, Tips & Stats

For our Borussia Dortmund vs. Chelsea prediction, we're going for a 2-1 win for the home side.

The Champions League round of 16 kicks off this week with Borussia Dortmund welcoming Chelsea to Germany on Wednesday night.

Borussia Dortmund reached the Champions League round of 16 by finishing second in Group B, a group that contained Manchester City, Sevilla and FC Copenhagen.

Dortmund have been up and down for the most part this season which is largely typical of them as they've struggled to mount a serious title challenge to Bayern Munich since Jurgen Klopp's departure back in 2015.

They have, though, found their best form of the season following the World Cup break as they enter this game having won their last six matches on the bounce in all competitions.

Most recently, Dortmund cruised to a 2-0 win away at Werder Bremen to keep them just three points shy of Bayern Munich at the top.

Dortmund have been energised by the rise of 18-year-old English winger Jamie Bynoe-Gittens, who signed from Manchester City back in 2020 and has enjoyed a breakthrough season. It was partially disrupted by a shoulder injury before the World Cup break, but since his return he's picked up where he left off and scored a screamer for the breakthrough goal in Bremen on Saturday.

Dortmund are looking very strong coming into this fixture and while they'll no doubt recognise Chelsea's threat with their talent on paper, and looking at their form they'll have to fancy themselves to progress from this tie.

Chelsea are currently 9th in the Premier League with eight wins, seven draws and seven losses from twenty-two games this season.

By all accounts, The Blues have had a disastrous season as they find themselves down in mid-table and ten points shy of the Champions League places.

They enter this game in characteristically poor form having won only one of their last seven matches in all competitions (W1 D3 L3), the most recent of which was a 1-1 draw at West Ham.

The result has led to many fans calling for Graham Potter to be removed from his post after delivering yet another underwhelming result, but in fairness the performance here was good in large parts and potentially suggested things are moving in the right direction with new signing Enzo Fernandez looking right at home in the centre of the park and Mykhailo Mudryk proving a constant menace.

Chelsea are in dire need of a result here as pressure mounts on Potter but they've been given a tricky tie as they're forced to face a side bang in form here. If Chelsea play as they have been doing expect a Dortmund victory.

            Dortmund Team News

Youssoufa Moukoko and Abdoulaye Kamara are both out here while Mateu Morey is doubtful.

Englishman Jamie Bynoe-Gittens will be pushing Gio Reyna for a starting spot after scoring off the bench against Werder Bremen last time out, as will Karim Adeyemi.

Sebastien Haller could start up front in Moukoko's absence, but otherwise Dortmund will likely name the same XI that started the win against Werder.

            Chelsea Team News

Christian Pulisic, N'Golo Kante, Edouard Mendy and Armando Broja all continue to miss out for The Blues, while Denis Zakaria, Raheem Sterling, Wesley Fofana and Mateo Kovacic are all doubtful.

Chelsea did not register Benoit Badiashile or Noni Madueke as Champions League players so both are ineligible for this tie.

Kalidou Koulibaly is a doubt with illness, but if passed fit he'll likely play alongside Thiago Silva at centre half.

Ben Chilwell could replace Marc Cucurella at left-back, while Mason Mount or Hakim Ziyech could come in for Madueke in the right flank.
