It's sixth against seventh in La Liga this weekend as Villarreal meet with Real Sociedad at the Estadio de la Cerámica in what is perhaps the biggest game of their La Liga seasons to date as they scrap for a Europa Conference League spot.
With a must-win battle for either side now, Sociedad are just three points ahead of the seventh-placed Villarreal and would secure a Europa Conference League spot with a win, while even a draw would do the job for them with only three points remaining after Sunday.
There is, however, still a chance either team can get into the Europa League ahead of Real Betis, but this gap is two points on Sociedad and five on Villarreal so, either one of those dreams is set to finish here.
Unai Emery’s impressive side do have a much better goals difference ahead of this one too. They sit with a +25 goals difference as opposed to Sociedad's +3, with Villarreal scoring a commendable 60 goals this season after also letting in only 35 - their draws have ultimately let them down in getting back into Europe this season.
Villarreal are also coming off the back of drawing Sevilla in La Liga, which although commendable too, was a defeat that saw their European dream take a beating. On the other hand, Emery's side also demolished Rayo Vallecano 5-1, as Alfonso Pedraza bagged a brace, just as Juan Foyth, Pau Torres and Paco Alcacer all scored a goal in the excellent result too.
At the same time, Sociedad eased past Cadiz on Thursday with Alexander Sorloth getting a rare goal in an underwhelming season for him. Adnan Januzaj also got a rare goal from the penalty spot, with and Portu doing the same to put in a 3-0 win. This came off the back of a telling time for Sociedad that saw them move out of Europa League spots, as they drew with Real Betis and Vallecano, while also losing to Barcelona and relegation-fighting Levante. A win here is a must for Sociedad with them also travelling to Atletico Madrid on the final day of the season.
It's a game that could go either way as only a point separates them, but with two defensive sides on a show, a 1-1 draw makes sense here.
