The most gripping of Premier League campaigns draws to its conclusion

The 2018/19 Premier League season finally came to it's blockbuster conclusion on Sunday afternoon, with Pep Guardiola's Manchester City running out worthy winners for the second time in as many seasons.

The Citizens ended the campaign with a massive 98 points, ensuring that they become the first side in a decade to lift back-to-back titles since Manchester United back in 2009.

But they were pushed like no side has ever been pushed before, with Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool finishing just a point behind them in second. The Reds accumulated 97 points, the highest total in PL history never to win the trophy so it was an extremely bitter pill for them to swallow - especially with them losing just once all season.

The title race was like something we've never seen before and the drama continued on Sunday, with the battle for the trophy going down to the final day for the first time in 5 years.

Away from matters at the top of the table we saw Chelsea make a return to the top four and Manchester United endure one of their worst ever top flight seasons, finishing in 6th & they have a ridiculously big rebuilding job on their hands this summer.

Newly promoted Wolves were one of the divisions surprise packages, securing a club record PL finish of 7th which could secure Europa League football next season. Whilst the other two newly promoted clubs (Fulham & Cardiff) made swift returns to the second tier alongside Huddersfield Town.

It's been an absolutely magnificent season and the wait for it all to start again is going to feel like forever, but in the meantime it gives us a chance to reflect. Below we've selected 5 of our favourite moments to come from the campaign and we could've picked so many more.

Andros Townsend's belter

Season-on-season the quality of the Premier League has improved which means we're seeing some world class performances and goals each week.

The 2018/19 Premier League campaign was no different with some absolutely incredible goals that we'll never forget. Salah's absolute peach against Chelsea, Arsenal's fluid team move rounded off Aaron Ramsey and Eden Hazard's solo mission against West Ham are just three of the contenders - but there's one that really stood out to us.

Crystal Palace's incredible 3-2 win at the Etihad Stadium in December was one of the shock results of the season and Andros Townsend's goal on that day was one of the best we've EVER seen.

The 27 year-old is known for his long range efforts and fantastic technique, but this goal must've even surprised him. With the scores locked at 1-1 with 34 minutes on the clock, the winger locked on to a loose ball on the edge of the City era which he absolutely leathered past the onlooking Ederson who couldn't get anywhere near it.

Townsend could've hit that ball another 100 times and probably wouldn't have come close to striking it as cleanly, an absolute thunderbolt into the top bin. This is our goal of the season by some distance and you'll do well to find a volley anywhere else in world football hit better than that. Rocket.

Neil Warnock's Antics

One of the oldest and most experienced managers in the game made his return to the Premier League at the age of 70 this season with Cardiff City - Neil Warnock. The wily old fox is a real marmite character amongst football fans, with the Bluebirds boss not afraid to speak up for himself or get involved in confrontation.

Throughout the 2018/19 campaign we saw him get embroiled in various spats with players, managers and authorities which resulted in a fair few fines - although we don't think he minds too much about that!

His Cardiff side were one of the favourites for the drop but they managed to fight until match day 37 when a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Crystal Palace ensured that they'd be making an instant return to the Championship - but he provided us with some memorable moments along the way.

City's late, controversial 2-1 defeat to Chelsea at the end of March was littered with questionable refereeing decisions which ended up costing Warnock's side the game. Prompting a somewhat bizarre response from him.

Instead of the usual foulmouthed rant that he's built a reputation for, Warnock stared out the officials at the full-time whistle with his hands on the back of his head - one of the most iconic moments to come from the campaign. Warnock isn't afraid to use words but his actions definitely spoke louder on this occasion!

He then followed it up with another ridiculous stare, this time down the camera before Cardiff's match with Crystal Palace last week and it's safe to say it went down a storm on social media.

He's one of the real characters of the game and it looks likely that this is the last time we'll see him in the top flight. Fair play Neil.

Liverpool's late heroics & a bit of luck

They may have missed out on the big prize but Liverpool had a magnificent league campaign. 97 points is an incredible achievement and they had to dig deep and work hard for them on several occasions.

No side in the top flight scored more late goals than the Reds and it added plenty of drama to an already gripping title race.

There's plenty to choose from, but the one that had the biggest impact of all was certainly Divock Origi's bizarre winner against Everton in the Merseyside derby back in December. The score was locked at 0-0 with just seconds remaining on the clock, when Jordan Pickford decided to fumble a miss hit Virgil van Dijk volley which was going nowhere somehow into the path of the Belgian, who nodded home from literally a yard out.

It sparked mental scenes which led to Klopp running on the pitch and celebrating with Alisson, a massive moment in their season.

Origi had a knack for late drama in the limited minutes that he got for the Reds this season, with him also heading home a late winner against Newcastle at St. James' Park last weekend. That ensured that the race for the title would go down to the final day but it came a little earlier than his effort at Goodison (86th minute).

And the final bit of late drama from Liverpool's season we're going to choose is the late own goal by Tottenham's Toby Alderweireld, which ensured Klopp's men recorded a 2-1 victory.

It was a hard fought game on Merseyside which Spurs came close to winning after a spirited second half display, but Liverpool knew they had to win to keep up the pressure on City. But with the clock ticking it looked like they were going to have to settle for a point before a ridiculous defensive mix-up.

Mohamed Salah's weak header was palmed into the path of the Belgian defender by Hugo Lloris who couldn't re-adjust his body in time to stop it going over the line. Salah wheeled away claiming the goal to the delight of co-commentator Jamie Carragher who shouted "MO SALAH YOU LITTLE DANCER". Blimey.

John Stones Liverpool Clearance

Elite sport often comes down to the finest of margins and that was certainly the case in the race for the Premier League title.

Runners-up Liverpool lost just one league game all season which incidentally came against eventual winners Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium. It was one of the spectacles of the year for a number of reasons and a real turning point in the campaign for Pep Guardiola's men after they had lost 2 of their previous 3 matches going into it.

Goals from Sergio Aguero and Leroy Sane did the damage for the boys in blue but a vital clearance from John Stones at the other end of the pitch ended up being absolutely vital not just in that game, but the destination of the title.

With the scores level at 0-0, Liverpool broke forward through Sadio Mane who hit the post. Stones went to clear the ball only for it to be somehow blocked by Ederson, which lead to it breaking towards goal.

Mohamed Salah rushed in to try force the ball home only for the England man to somehow recover and clear it off the line. To the naked eye it looked like it went over the line and the Liverpool players celebrated as if it did, only for goal line technology to prove other wise.

We have no idea how Stones managed to stop that ball from going over the line and we don't think he does either! Replays show that he scuffed it slightly, meaning if he connected with it properly it probably would've hit Salah's boot and gone in!

A comical series of events which has played a massive role in City winning the title and Liverpool missing out - just 11.7mm away. Incredible.

Vincent Kompany's Leicester Stunner

Our final choice was an absolute no-brainer. Last Monday when the going was starting to get very tough against a plucky Leicester side, someone needed to stand up and be counted for.

The clock was ticking. The Etihad was getting increasingly nervous with each misplaced place, each opposing counter attack. Something had to happen. That thing was Vincent Kompany.

The big Belgian has been the defensive lynchpin behind all of their title winning campaigns and despite not featuring as much as he'd like to this season, he's still one of Pep Guardiola's go-to-guys in the big games and it told against the Foxes.

Kompany has scored big goals in City's title triumphs back in 2011/12 (v Man Utd) and 2013/14 (v West Ham) and last Monday he had his say in emphatic fashion against Brendan Rodgers' in-form Foxes.

On the 70th minute he approached the Leicester penalty area unopposed and with the goal starting to open up nicely, he decided to hit one from distance. And boy did he hit it.

If Sergio Aguero or Kevin De Bruyne score that then we're blown away - but Vincent Kompany. My god. The 33 year-olds strike flew like a rocket into the top bin and left former Blue Kasper Schmeichel helpless between the sticks.

There couldn't have been a more popular scorer for that goal and it raised the roof at the Etihad. A season defining moment.
