Ahead of the date, we've looked at the bookies’ favourites to win the award and each player's individual argument for winning the award. He’s continued his brilliant form into this season as well as he has scored 9 goals and assisted 6 goals in his opening 12 games for Barcelona and is set to reach an incredible landmark as his next game for Barcelona will be his 700th. Should Messi win the Ballon d’Or, it will be his 6th time of doing so.

Virgil van Dijk - 4/7

The bookies' second favourite to win the award is Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk after the defenders incredible 18/19 season with Liverpool. Since his arrival from Southampton, van Dijk has taken Liverpool to another level and has been pivotal in their recent form, finishing the 18/19 season with 97 points and winning the Champions League. Having played every Premier League game for Liverpool last season, van Dijk kept 20 clean sheets, which was helped by his 74% tackle success rate. There have been calls from players, managers and fans that the Ballon d’Or has been a popularity contest for attackers in recent years, with the last defender to win the award being Fabio Cannavaro back in 2006. However, it’s looking likely that a defender may win it this year.

Cristiano Ronaldo - 12/1

The bookies third favourite to win the award is Juventus forward Cristiano Ronaldo. Despite turning 34 in February this year, Ronaldo has continued to deliver for club and country, scoring 34 goals and registering 12 assists for Juventus since he arrived at the start of the 18/19 season as well as scoring 14 goals in 10 appearances for Portugal in 2019, which helped him reach 700 career goals.
