Aston Villa vs Bayern Munich Prediction

A repeat of the 1982 final presents Aston Villa with their first proper test of UEFA Champions League football; however, Bayern Munich should be claiming revenge in this fixture.

Aston Villa's home form should provide some concern for Bayern Munich and many teams in the UEFA Champions League, as the Villains have only lost twice in their previous ten competitive fixtures.

Although, Bayern Munich's overall form should allow them to overcome Aston Villa, as Vincent Kompany's men have not lost in their last 13 games. Bayern Munich have made a habit of scoring first, with Bayern Munich scoring first in eight of their last nine. Expect goals in this fixture, with more than 2.5 goals have been scored in the last five for Aston Villa and eight of the previous ten for Bayern Munich.

This should be an intriguing clash between two teams with an eye for goal. For this game, we are predicting Bayern Munich to edge out this fixture in a high-scoring affair, with a 3-2 scoreline.

Aston Villa vs Bayern Munich Preview & Prediction

The second matchday of the UEFA Champions League takes place this week as clubs across the competition adapt to the new league phase. A repeat of the 1982 final occurs at Villa Park, as Aston Villa host Bayern Munich.

            Date: 02/10/2024
            Location: Villa Park
            Kick-Off: 8 pm

Aston Villa embarks on their first UEFA Champions League club test when they host Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League. Unai Emery guided his Aston Villa side to a terrific start in this year’s competition with a tremendous 3-0 win over BSC Young Boys. Aston Villa had their midfield to thank for a clinical display, as goals from Amadou Onana, Youri Tielemans, and Jacob Ramsey gave the Villains the comfortable victory in Switzerland.

Vincent Kompany undertook his UEFA Champions League debut as Bayern Munich manager with an emphatic victory over Dinamo Zagreb despite a slight scare. Bayern took a three-goal lead through goals from Harry Kane, Raphael Guerreiro, and Michael Olise; however, Dinamo Zagreb pulled two goals back. Bayern then romped up the pressure, with further goals from Harry Kane (x3), Michael Olise, Leroy Sane and Leon Goretzka.

The two teams had met before famously, in the 1982 European Cup final - where a 67th-minute goal from Peter Withe secured Aston Villa’s only European Cup and the sixth consecutive year where an English team won the illustrious trophy.

            Where to watch

The game will be shown live on TNT Sports 1.

Hiroki Ito and Josip Stanisic are both ruled out until early November.

Expected Bayern Munich Eleven: Neuer, Guerreiro, Upamecano, Kim Min-Jae, Davies, Kimmich, Pavlovic, Musiala, Gnabry, Kane.

            Form Guide

These two sides have only met once in their history, with that being the final in 1982, where Aston Villa were the victors for their only European Cup triumph. The Villains have a respectable record against German opponents, with six wins in ten competitive fixtures across their scattered European history.

Aston Villa have been in such impressive home form, having only lost twice in their previous ten competitive home games. Coincidentally, one of their more recent defeats at home was in Europe, as they fell to a home-leg defeat against Olympiakos in last season’s UEFA Europa Conference League.

Unai Emery’s side will hope to take their recent positive form into a pivotal tie against the German juggernaut, with the Villains unbeaten in their previous six - five wins and a draw. In their recent league game against Ipswich Town, Aston Villa were held to a 2-2 draw away at Portman Road. Ollie Watkins and Morgan Rogers had given the Villains the lead after Liam Delap had opened the scoring for the hosts. However, Emery’s side were denied the win thanks to Liam Delap completing his Brace.

Bayern Munich have seemingly resumed normality this season under Vincent Kompany and will be buoyed by their opening-day triumph against Dinamo Zagreb, Bayern Munich are unbeaten in their previous 13 games across all competitions, with five wins and a draw from their opening six Bundesliga games. In their last fixture, Bayern Munich were held to a 1-1 draw against current Bundesliga Champions Bayer Leverkusen, with Aleksandar Pavlovic equalising for Bayern Munich.

Bayern Munich have a far greater history when facing European opposition, which is understandable considering the magnitude of the club. Bayern Munich have faced English opposition on 61 occasions, winning 26, drawing 18 and losing 17. Bayern Munich have faced English sides in the European Cup Final on four occasions, losing twice to Chelsea, Aston Villa and Manchester United respectively, whilst beating Leeds United in 1975.
