Bayern Munich vs Arsenal: Preview, Prediction & Betting Tips

A Champions League semi-final place is at stake as Bayern Munich host Arsenal at the Allianz in the quarter-final second leg.

            Date: 17/04/24

            Kick-off time: 20:00

            Venue: Allianz Arena

The first leg was an entertaining affair, with Bayern picking up perhaps a surprise draw. Arsenal were favoured at home against a visiting side who have struggled at big times throughout the season. However, Thomas Tuchel’s men were able to leave with the tie level, and would have been disappointed not to have left with more. It was the hosts who broke the deadlock, as star man Bukayo Saka expertly finished past Manuel Neuer in the Bayern net. Despite the fantastic start, it was cancelled out by a goal from former Arsenal winger Serge Gnabry, who capitalised on an error from Gabriel to equalise. A shocked Emirates fell silent as Leroy Sane waltzed his way through the defence before being brought down in the area by William Saliba. Harry Kane scored the resulting penalty. Leandro Trossard came on as a second half substitute, and saved the game for his team, to take a draw back to Germany. The ending was frantic as Bayern hit the post very late on and Arsenal were denied a penalty, with Saka adjudged to have initiated contact with Neuer.

Mikel Arteta will have concerns about his side’s away form in European competition, with just one win so far in this campaign. This was against Sevilla with losses against Lens and Porto. Bayern have been dominant at home, with just the one draw coming against Copenhagen. In four games, they have scored nine goals and could pose the strong defensive line of the visitors some issues, just as they did last week. The hosts are vulnerable in defence, however, so there should be plenty of opportunities for both teams.

Arsenal’s last trip to Munich ended in a 5-1 defeat in the second leg of a Round of 16 tie in 2017. This was the second year in a row in which they endured this score line. Their last win at the Allianz came in 2013 as they won 2-0. Although, this was not enough to send them through as they were eliminated on away goals.

            Bayern Munich

Serge Gnabry has been ruled out, whilst Leroy Sane is also a major doubt. Kingsley Coman was taken off at the weekend with what seems like a serious injury. Manuel Neuer missed the last game as a precaution but should be available. Alphonso Davies will miss out through suspension.

            Arsenal

Arsenal have no fitness concerns aside from Jurrien Timber who has been missing for the majority of the season with a knee injury.

            Form Guide

            Bayern Munich

In their last five games, Bayern Munich have won two, drawn one and lost one. It has been a disappointing period for Bayern in the Bundesliga as their title hopes are all but over. However, they picked up a very good 2-2 result at the Emirates in their quarter-final tie against Arsenal. It can be argued that they should have left with more, but the away draw gives them a very slight advantage heading into the second leg. The Gunners went ahead through Bukayo Saka, but a mistake at the back allowed Serge Gnabry to equalise. Leroy Sane was brought down in the box giving Harry Kane the opportunity to put Bayern ahead from the spot. A Leandro Trossard goal in the second half means the tie is level.

This run started with plenty of goals, as they scored five away from home in a 5-2 win at bottom side Darmstadt. The hosts surprisingly took the lead, but this was soon cancelled out by Jamal Musiala. Kane’s strike then restored the lead for the visitors, before Musiala grabbed a second, and Gnabry and Mathys Tel tacked on two more. The hosts netted a very late consolation in stoppage time.

A crushing defeat in Der Klassiker came next as they fell 2-0 at home to their rivals Borussia Dortmund. Karim Adeyemi broke the deadlock after just 10 minutes, and the lead was doubled late on by Julian Ryerson. Bayern enjoyed more shots and more possession, but could not find a breakthrough. They then suffered a disappointing loss as they were defeated 3-2 at mid-table Heidenheim. Kane and Gnabry put them ahead, but two goals in two minutes made it 2-2. The hosts then scored a winner with 10 minutes to go. Their most recent game was a home fixture against Koln. They came out on top 2-0 winners after goals from Raphael Guerreiro and Thomas Muller.

            Arsenal

In their last five games, Arsenal have won two, drawn two and lost one. It has been a good spell for the Gunners, but they were dealt a huge blow in the Premier League title race as they lost their most recent game against Aston Villa. Leon Bailey and Ollie Watkins scored two second-half goals to condemn them to a 2-0 defeat.

Their first of this run was a huge title clash at Man City. The game ended goalless, and the visitors were dominated by the champions. However, the defence held firm and showed why they are amongst the best in the continent by restricting City to just a single shot on target.

They quickly returned to winning ways, however, with a comfortable 2-0 victory at home to Luton. Both goals came in the first half, with Martin Odegaard opening the scoring, and Daiki Hashioka converting into his own net. They followed this with another convincing win as they comfortably beat Brighton 3-0 away from home. Bukayo Saka scored from the spot, before Kai Havertz and Leandro Trossard added a pair. Focus then shifted to European action as they took on Bayern Munich in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-finals. Whilst they did not lose, they still head to the Allianz with a slight disadvantage. They went 1-0 up thanks to an excellent finish by Saka, though this was cancelled out by ex-Gunner Serge Gnabry, who took advantage of an error at the back. Harry Kane added another goal against Arsenal to his catalogue, as he converted a penalty. Trossard scored a second-half equaliser to salvage a draw.

            Footy Accumulators Prediction

It is a perfectly poised tie and it could potentially go either way. Arsenal are the better team, but Bayern Munich will have home advantage and history on their side. The Gunners tend to struggle away in Europe, which opens the door for the hosts to secure a semi-final place – Bayern Munich 2-1 Arsenal
