Championship Relegation Odds

The Championship's Relegation Story Has An almighty end

As we head into the final eight games of the season, some teams are cautiously looking over their shoulders to the trap door to League One.

The bottom two sides, Luton Town and Barnsley, will need something of a miracle if they are to avoid an immediate return to the third tier.

However, with one relegation place remaining, the battle to stay up will be hotly contested, especially with there being just three points between 17th placed Stoke City and 22nd placed Charlton Athletic.

To Stay Up In The Championship

Barnsley and Luton are doomed

Luton and Barnsley have occupied the relegation zone for most of this season and seemed doomed for life back in League One throughout.

To be relegated, Luton are a low 1/6, while Barnsley are 2/5. Just one point separates the two down at the bottom, but with four points and a woeful goal difference to make up, it really is tough to see how either of them get out of this mess.

Both clubs with clash with each other in a few weeks, which could make the world of difference in not finishing bottom of the table. However, considering Luton meet Swansea and Leeds United before then, it's tough to seem them moving out of the drop zone anytime soon.

As for Barnsley, the fixture list is much more kind as they meet only three teams inside the top 10 and must meet Stoke City and Wigan Athletic. Although, it is tough to see either side playing Championship football next season.

Hull City relegation odds

The Tigers were enduring a fairly solid season in the Championship before the turn of the calendar year.

Grant McCann's side were staying within the confines of safe mid-table before their current run of form where they have gone 12 straight matches without winning, drawing only two of those. This poor form has sucked them into danger and they haven't been able to get out of this rut since.

One thing that might have upset the apple cart at the KCOM Stadium was the sale of star player, Jarrod Bowen to West Ham on transfer deadline day. Prior to his departure, he managed to rack up 16 goals from 29 Championship appearances this season and so heads have turned towards Tom Eaves and veteran, Kamil Grosicki for the goals.

Sitting in 21st, one place above the relegation zone, the odds give them a chance of EVENS to stay up whilst the teams above them have considerably slimmer odds. Currently, the odds to go down are 8/11 and these odds were slashed dramatically after their 1-0 loss to Charlton last week.

It is difficult to see where the next win is going to come from for the East Yorkshire side. The squad need an injection of belief that they are capable of fighting the battle ahead and it is surprising to still see McCann in the managerial role.

Middlesbrough Relegation Odds

It was a huge gamble for Middlesbrough to give the job to club legend Jonathan Woodgate, which was his first taste of management. Now, it's fair to say it has not paid off and Neil Warnock has recently taken the helm to try and steer them away from the unthinkable.

Since their relegation from the Premier League in 2017, fans were displeased with Tony Pulis' style of play despite two top seven finishes in as many seasons. One thing that has remained at the Riverside Stadium is the lack of goals. Now, Boro have only managed to accumulate 180 goals from their last 167 league matches, dating back to 2016.

The lack of goals has been the root cause of many problems at the club and their current form of one win from their last 11 matches requires improvement to give them the best possible chance of avoiding their first relegation to the third tier since 1986.

Boro stand just four points clear of the relegation zone but that advantage might just help them see the job out with odds of 1/7 to stay up. However, to head down they are 4/1, which only stayed as such. because of Hull's lose to Charlton, as Middlesbrough looked truly dreadful in their 3-0 loss to Swansea.

Huddersfield Town Relegation Odds

Huddersfield reached the promised land in 2017 when they won the Championship play-offs to join the ranks for the Premier League for the first-ever time.

One fairly decent year in the top-flight was followed by a shocking campaign that saw them all but relegated by January and they have struggled for consistency every since moving back down two seasons ago.

The club's recent 2-0 loss to Wigan has thrown them right back into the mix as the Terriers sit just five clear of the drop zone with 24 points still to play for. Danny Cowley's men are now 9/2 to be relegated and 1/8 to stay up, however, taking a punt on them to face the drop certainly isn't a bad shout.

Huddersfield still have to face Nottingham Forest, Preston North End and West Bromwich Albion; three games they are not expected to win. As well as this, their games against Birmingham City, Reading and Sheffield Wednesday won't be a walk in the park, based on how they are at a similar level to the Terries this season.

Wigan Athletic Relegation Odds

Since Wigan's fifth-place finish in the 2013/14 Championship season, the Latics have really struggled to cope while in the second tier, having since been relegated to League One twice and consequently won the League One title twice.

This season has been no exception to those second-tier struggles. They currently sit in 20th place and it does look like they are set to avoid experiencing a third Championship relegation in the space of six seasons.

The club, this season, spent three months in the bottom three and only just came out into safety following good current form with just one defeat in the last nine matches.

It has taken a while but things certainly seem to be looking up for Paul Cook's side as they aim for a third consecutive season without experiencing relegation since 2012. The odds to stay up are now 1/100 following their win over Huddersfield and they are a high 16/1 to go down.

Indeed, it does look as if Wigan fans can now confidently say they are staying up.
