Teams From Europe’s Top 5 Leagues Featuring in the Europa League

This season’s Europa League campaign has a new format and has already kicked off with the qualifying rounds.

The draw for the new Group Stage will take place on the 29th of August with the first match week scheduled to take place on the 25th and 26th of September.

Here is a rundown of all the teams from the top five leagues that are competing in the 2024/25 Europa League.

Premier League (England)

This season Manchester United and Tottenham will be representing the Premier League in the Europa League.

Despite a rollercoaster season in the Premier League, Manchester United managed to grab a spot in the Europa League.

In 38 games in the Premier League, Manchester United picked up 18 wins, six draws and 14 losses, leaving them on 60 points and in eighth place, six points from the official Europa League spot.

However, United had another chance to qualify for the Europa League. After a penalty shootout win over Coventry City in the Semi-finals, United faced their home city rivals Manchester City. Even with a late goal from Jeremy Doku, the goals from Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo gave United the 2 - 1 win and the spot in the Europa League.

Manchester United has competed in the Europa League six times in their histories. United have lifted the Europa League on one occasion back in the 2016/17 season, where they beat Ajax 2 - 0 in the Final.

The most recent outing in the Europa League for United was back in 2022/23 where they made it to the Quarter-final, being knocked out by Sevilla.

Tottenham are the other Premier League side in the Europa League this season.

Spurs finished fifth in the Premier League last season, picking up 20 wins, six draws and 12 losses in 38 games which left them on 66 points, two points from Champions League football.

Tottenham have competed in the Europa League seven times since the format switch.

Spurs have never made the Final in the current edition of the competition, with the furthest they have made it being their Quarter-final appearance back in the 2012/13 season where they were knocked out on penalties by Swiss side Basel.

The most recent outing for Tottenham was in 2020/21 where they were knocked out after extra time by Dinamo Zagreb.

Both Manchester United and Tottenham will be big shouts to lift the trophy in May.

La Liga (Spain)

The Spanish representatives this season in the Europa League are Athletic Bilbao and Real Sociedad.

Athletic Bilbao grabbed one of the two Europa League spots on offer in Spain. In 38 games in La Liga, Athletic picked up 19 wins, 11 draws and eight losses which left them on 68 points and in fifth, eight points off of Champions League football.

Bilbao have competed in the Europa League seven times so far and have never won the competition.

Athletic have made the Final on one occasion back in 2012. In this Final, Bilbao took on fellow Spanish side Atlético Madrid who beat Bilbao 3 - 0.

The last time out for Athletic in the Europa League was back in 2017/18 where they made it to the Round of 16, where they lost 5 - 2 on aggregate to Marseille.

The other side representing Spain in the Europa League is Real Sociedad. Last season Sociedad picked up 16 wins, 12 draws and ten losses which left them on 60 points, three points within the Europa League spot.

Real Sociedad have competed in the Europa League on five occasions. The furthest Sociedad have ever made it in the Europa League is the Round of 16 where they were knocked out by Roma after a 2 - 0 aggregate loss.

The most recent outing for Sociedad was back in 2022/23 where they made the Round of 16.

Both Spanish sides have a good chance in this season’s Europa League, though they will have to prove themselves against the other sides from the top five leagues.

Bundesliga (Germany)

The two German teams in the Europa League this season are Eintracht Frankfurt and Hoffenheim.

After the success of the German sides in the Champions League, the sixth and seventh placed teams in the Bundesliga were given spots in the Europa League.

Eintracht Frankfurt picked up 11 wins, 14 draws and nine losses in 34 games which left them on 47 points and in sixth place.

Frankfurt have competed in the Europa League four times, lifting the trophy back in the 2021/22 season when they beat Rangers 6 - 5 on penalties.

This was Frankfurt's most recent outing in the Europa League, before that the furthest Frankfurt had gotten in the competition was the Semi-finals where they lost 5 - 4 on penalties to Chelsea.

Hoffenheim also qualified for the Europa League via the Bundesliga. In 34 games, Hoffenheim picked up 13 wins, seven draws and 14 losses which left them on 46 points and in seventh.

Hoffenheim have only competed in the Europa League twice in their history, in 2017/18 and 2020/21. The best result for Hoffenheim was a Round of 32 exit after a loss to Molde.

The German sides have had success in this competition, but there’s a chance that they might not live up to the German success in Europe last season.

Roma have made seven appearances in the Europa League but are yet to win the competition. The closest Roma have come is their appearance in the 2022/23 Final where they lost 5 - 2 in a controversial penalty shootout.

Lazio earnt their spot in the Europa League with their seventh-place spot in the Serie A. In 38 games, Lazio managed 18 wins, seven draws and 13 losses which left them on 61 points.

This will be Nice’s fourth appearance in the Europa League. The furthest Nice have made it in the competition is the Round of 32 where they lost 4 - 1 to Loko Moscow.
