English Players to Watch Abroad This Season

Fikayo Tomori - AC Milan

Fikayo Tomori will be looking to continue his excellent start to life in Italy following his move from Chelsea in January 2021.

The 24-year-old will be desperate to make it into England’s World Cup squad in Qatar and certainly did himself no harm last season having won the Serie A title. The Calgary-born defender averaged 2.4 tackles, 1.5 interceptions, 2.5 clearances and 0.7 blocks each game over the course of 30 appearances in Italy’s top flight.

If reports are true, the Rossoneri could be set to add another English talent to their backline in the shape of Tottenham defender Japhet Tanganga.

Noni Madueke - PSV Eindhoven

Although he is ruled out until the new year, PSV Eindhoven winger Noni Madueke could still be one to look out for.

The 20-year-old former Tottenham academy player scored nine goals and created six assists for PSV last season on top of the 17 goal contributions he managed in 32 appearances across the 2020/21 campaign and could still have a bright second half of the season.

He missed his side’s 5-3 hammering of fierce rivals Ajax in the Johan Cruijff Shield, but, it is said that new PSV boss Ruud van Nistelrooy has been a huge influence on his career to date.

Jude Bellingham - Borussia Dortmund

Jude Bellingham is arguably one of the biggest talents in world football at present having showcased his skills for Borussia Dortmund since his move from hometown club Birmingham City in 2020.

The 19-year-old bagged his first goal of the season last week against 1860 Munich in the DFB Pokal which was his 29th goal contribution for the club in 91 appearances - a very good tally for an out-and-out central midfielder, hence why he has been linked with £100m+ moves back to his homeland.

Tammy Abraham & Chris Smalling - AS Roma

AS Roma duo Tammy Abraham and Chris Smalling will be hoping to have another positive season for the Serie A outfit having helped them to their first trophy since the 2007/08 campaign when they won the Europa Conference League last season.

Having added the likes of Nemanja Matic and Paulo Dybala to their ranks, it could be an exciting time for the club under Jose Mourinho. Last season, Abraham managed to make himself a fan favourite with 27 goals and five assists in 53 matches. Meanwhile, Smalling averaged 1.3 tackles, 1 interception, 3.3 clearances and 0.9 blocks per game in the Serie A over 23 starts.

Stephy Mavididi - Montpellier

24-year-old Derby-born striker Stephy Mavididi has had an interesting career path so far, having played for the likes of Arsenal, Preston, Charlton, Juventus and Dijon before finding his feet at Ligue 1 outfit Montpellier.

Mavididi has scored 22 goals and created three assists in 88 top-flight matches in France and has often been utilised at left-wing, having played there 20 times last season, as he scored eight and created three assists in Ligue 1 for Montpellier last season.

Marcus Edwards - Sporting Lisbon

The final player on this list is Marcus Edwards who like Madueke, started his career off in Tottenham’s academy before making an intriguing switch abroad to Vitoria Guimaraes.

During his time at Vitoria, the 23-year-old scored 20 goals and made 14 assists in 96 appearances, seeing him make a progressive career switch to Sporting Lisbon for a £6.75m fee in January 2022.

Since then, the London-born winger has gone on to score three goals and create three assists in 15 appearances.

Reece Oxford - Augsburg

Since joining Augsburg in 2019, Reece Oxford hasn’t looked back career-wise having been loaned out to the likes Reading and Borussia Monchengladbach in his latter years at West Ham.

The 23-year-old has made 66 Bundesliga appearances since moving to Germany in 2019, and had a decent campaign last time out, averaging 0.9 tackles, 2.4 interceptions, 5.6 clearances and 1.1 blocks per game. This was a good effort by the Englishman despite Augsburg finishing 14th in the Bundesliga last season.

Etienne Green - St-Etienne

Goalkeeper Etienne Green is perhaps a little less known than those previously mentioned on this list, however, at the age of 22, the Colchester-born shot-stopper can be regarded as a good prospect.

Green played 15 matches as Les Verts were relegated to Ligue 2 last season, but, will likely be benefit from more game time and have a chance to further develop his career. The English goalkeeper came through the French club’s youth academy and has made two appearances for England’s Under 21s.
