La Liga Top Goalscorer Odds

Who would be a better candidate for the top scorer award than the man who achieved exactly that last season?

Karim Benzema had a stunning 2021/22 campaign for Real Madrid, with the Frenchman scoring 27 league goals to get his hands on the Pichichi award for the first time ever. Benzema also contributed 15 goals in Madrid’s successful Champions League campaign, ensuring Los Blancos ended their season with the two trophies that their demanding fanbase covets the most.

Benzema had long been overshadowed by Cristiano Ronaldo as Madrid’s main man, but ever since the Portuguese departed the club, Benzema has stepped up to become Madrid’s best player – the Frenchman has scored at least 20 goals in every league campaign since Ronaldo left for Italy in 2018.

With these ever-improving figures and considering the impressive season that he has just had, it would be no surprise to see Benzema crowned top scorer in 22/23.

Robert Lewandowski will be playing in La Liga in 2022/23, with the Polish striker joining Barcelona on a three-year contract for a fee of around £40m last month.

In Lewandowski, Barcelona have got themselves a certified goalscorer, and he is someone who can replace the goals that Lionel Messi brought to the team. He scored 35 league goals for Bayern Munich last season, and just to underline how prolific Lewandowski really is – in all but one of eight seasons at Bayern, he managed to score at least 20 league goals, with the most he scored in a season being 41 in 2020/21.

And to further underline what a goalscoring machine Lewandowski is, he has only scored less than 20 league goals in just two seasons since the 2010/11 campaign. With Barcelona further strengthening in attacking areas with the signing of Raphinha and re-signing of Ousmane Dembele, Lewandowski has creative players who will surely be creating a lot of chances for him. Therefore, it would be no surprise to see the Pole carry on his goalscoring form and win the top scorer award in the upcoming season.

Vinicius Junior is now considered one of Real Madrid’s key players, with the Brazilian having a seriously impressive 2021/22 season and playing a major part in Madrid’s success – he scored 17 league goals and scored the winner in last season’s Champions League final.

Prior to that, the winger had scored just three league goals in both the 2019/20 and 2020/21 seasons, so the jump from three to 17 shows how much Vinicius has improved. With the Brazilian now firmly settled in the Spanish capital and Madrid strengthening their squad with the signings of defender Antonio Rudiger and defensive midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni, this stacked Madrid team will surely taste success in the upcoming season, and Vinicius will surely play a part of that with yet another impressive season.

Iago Aspas has been one of the most consistent forwards to play in La Liga over the last decade – since making his return to Celta Vigo for the 2015/16 season in which he scored 14 goals, the Spaniard has since gone on to score 19, 22, 20, 14 and 14, and just last season he scored 18 league goals to help Celta to an 11th place finish in the table.

With Celta having no other players who can score double-digit goals over the course of a season like Aspas, he has been the key man for the club over the past few seasons and with the arrivals of forwards such as Carles Perez and Goncalo Paciencia, Aspas could go to another level this season.

Villarreal’s Gerard Moreno had an injury-ridden 2021/22 campaign, meaning that the forward would miss 16 games in all competitions – the Spaniard did still score nine goals in 17 league appearances and also chipped in with two goals in Villarreal’s amazing Champions League campaign, with one in the group-stage against Young Boys and another in the round-of-16 against Juventus.

Moreno had scored 23 goals the previous season, and 18 the season before that so he is a confirmed La Liga danger, but he is still an outsider to be this season’s top scorer – however, if he can stay fit and Villarreal have yet another impressive season like they just had, then Gerard Moreno could be a surprise winner of the La Liga top-goalscorer award.

Antoine Griezmann enjoyed a very successful few years under Diego Simeone at Atletico Madrid, with the Frenchman’s 141 goals in 292 matches showcasing his goalscoring prowess.

Griezmann scored 22, 22, 16, 19 and 15 league goals during his time at Atletico, earning him a move to Barcelona. Since that move the Frenchman’s career has taken a downturn, only scoring nine, 13 and three league goals for the Blaugrana. As a result, Griezmann was sent back to Atletico on loan last season, and it has been confirmed that he will be staying at the Wanda Metropolitano for the upcoming season.

Once again playing under Diego Simeone, the manager who got the best out of the Frenchman, will be good for the attacker, and it should help him to get back to his goalscoring form of old. Whilst an outsider for the Pichichi award due to his poor form over the past couple of years, Griezmann is still a top player and playing under a manager in a side that plays to his strengths will surely help him to score a decent amount of goals this season.
