Karim Benzema - Real Madrid

Karim Benzema topped the La Liga scoring charts last season for the first time ever in his career, after continuously falling short to Lionel Messi while the Argentine was at Barcelona in the 2020/21, 2019/20 and the 2018/19 seasons.

Benzema scored 27 goals in La Liga last campaign, the most the Frenchman has ever scored in Spain, and four more than his previous highest-scoring season in Spain’s top flight.

The Frenchman also finished top scorer in the Champions League this season. Benzema scored a hat-trick in the quarter-final first leg at Stamford Bridge and then again against Chelsea in the second leg as well as three goals across two legs in the semi-final against Manchester City on the way to winning the entire competition.

Benzema’s 27 goals in 32 games showed the Frenchman’s dominance over the Spanish league - something that’s even more likely to be repeated in the 2022/23 season.

Iago Aspas - Celta Vigo

Iago Aspas finished his La Liga season with 18 goals in 37 appearances for Celta Vigo, who despite employing the second-highest scorer in the league, only finished 11th in the league.

The 2021/22 season, though a higher scoring season than the 2020/21 and 2019/20 seasons where he only scored 14 goals, is still lower scoring than Aspas’ highest ever tally of 22 goals, which he achieved in the 2017/18 season.

Though Aspas may not be in as much of a star-studded team as those in the top La Liga spots, Aspas is still in good contention to be the 2022/23 La Liga top scorer.

Gerard Moreno - Villarreal

Gerard Moreno scored nine goals in his 17 appearances for Villarreal this season. Despite Villarreal finishing seventh in La Liga, qualifying for the Europa Conference League, Moreno did score important goals on Villarreal’s long run to the Champions League Semi-finals, including a goal against Juventus.

Despite his somewhat low tally for the season, Moreno did so in far fewer games than the rest of his striker competition, only 17 games. This means that Moreno has 0.68 goals per 90 minutes and a 31% goal conversion rate, one of the higher ones in the league.

The Spaniard had a decent season considering his injury problems, and with more game time on the pitch, he could be in with a shout of hitting a tally close to the 23 he fired in during the 2020/21 season.

Antoine Griezmann - Atletico Madrid (on loan from Barcelona)

Since his first stint at Atletico Madrid, Antoine Griezmann has had a tough time in La Liga. The Frenchman only scored three goals in 26 games for Atletico Madrid last season, his lowest return since his first season in La Liga with Real Sociedad where he scored seven goals.

However, Griezmann could return to his former glory at Atletico Madrid this season, where he’ll spend his second season on loan. In his first spell at the club, Griezmann scored 94 goals in his 180 La Liga appearances for Atletico Madrid.

Though his move to Barcelona can be considered unsuccessful, only scoring 22 goals in 74 games - perhaps due to being shifted aside for the likes of Messi, Griezmann cannot be counted out for challenging for top scorer in La Liga next season.

Memphis Depay - Barcelona

Memphis Depay completed a free transfer from Lyon to Barcelona last summer and scored 12 goals in 28 games, making him the ninth-highest scorer in La Liga. However, he could only help Barcelona to a second-place finish 13 points adrift from rivals Real Madrid.

The Dutchman was the top scorer for Barcelona in his first season with the Blaugrana, tied with January signing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and averaged a goal every 189 minutes with a 22% goal conversion rate.

With his first season under his belt, the successful transition period for the Dutchman is over and La Liga could see the full potential of Depay, something similar to his 63 goals in 139 appearances for Lyon.

Joao Felix - Atletico Madrid

Joao Felix scored eight times in his 24 La Liga appearances for Atletico Madrid this season, this didn’t even place him within the top 20 scorers in the Spanish league as Atletico finished third, 16 points behind Real Madrid.

Felix made a big-money move to Atletico Madrid from Benfica in 2019 for a staggering £113 million, wherein the three seasons in La Liga he has scored 21 goals in 82 appearances at only 22-years-old.

The youngster, who was a revelation at Benfica as a teenager, scoring 15 goals in 26 games in his debut season in the Primeira Liga, could be a likely candidate for top scorer in La Liga next season.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang - Barcelona

32-year-old Gabonese striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was sensational for Barcelona following his shock move from Arsenal in January, with the former Borussia Dortmund man scoring 11 goals in 17 La Liga appearances.

Under Xavi, Aubameyang looks to be reaching the goalscoring heights he managed at Arsenal under Unai Emery when he finished as the Premier League’s Golden Boot winner back in 2018/19 having scored 22 goals.

Aubameyang notably also managed to win the Bundesliga top scorer award in 2016/17 when he found the back of the net 31 times for Dortmund, meaning that he could be a real threat to Benzema next season if he plays a similar amount of minutes to the Frenchman.

Could Robert Lewandowski be La Liga's top goalscorer in 2022/23?

With the rumours of Robert Lewandowksi’s potential departure from Bayern Munich this summer after eight seasons with the German club, the Pole has been heavily linked with a move to Barcelona.

The Pole broke all sorts of goalscoring records this season, as he broke Gerd Muller’s record of Bundesliga goals in a calendar season with 43 goals. In the 2021/22 Bundesliga season, Lewandowski scored 35 goals in 34 appearances, making him the Bundesliga top scorer - 11 goals ahead of Patrik Schick in second.

Lewandowski has played against a Spanish side 27 different times and has scored 14 goals, which suggests that he would be a more than reasonable shout for La Liga top scorer next season if he makes the move to Barcelona.
