Clermont Foot and Rennes go head to head in a battle of ninth against fourth in Ligue 1.

The home side enters this match off the back of an embarrassing penalty shootout defeat to FCOSK06 after a 0-0 draw. Clermont had previously beaten Lyon 1-0 after 2-0 and 2-1 defeats to Lille and Lens. Before this sequence of results, Clermont had drawn 1-1 with Montpellier.

Rennes have won three of their last four games since their 1-1 draw away at Lille, following 2-1 wins over Toulouse and Nice on either side of a 3-1 loss to Reims. In their last outing, Rennes progressed to the next round of the Coupe de France following a 2-1 win away at Bordeaux.

Lorient against AS Monaco could be another interesting clash from France if recent results are anything to go by.

Lorient managed to beat La Chataigneraie 6-0 in the Coupe de France, as well as Angers 2-1, ending a three-game winless run having been beaten 2-0 by Montpellier and 2-1 at home to PSG on either side of a 1-1 draw with Strasbourg.

Monaco suffered a humiliating loss in the Coupe de France, as they lost on penalties to Rodez after blowing a 2-0 lead in a 2-2 draw. Before this, Philippe Clement’s men had beaten Brest 1-0, Auxerre 3-2 and Toulouse 2-0. In this sequence, Monaco had also been beaten 3-2 at home by Marseille.

In the League Cup quarter-finals, Southampton hosts Manchester City at St Mary’s, with Pep Guardiola’s men coming into this game as firm favourites to progress.

Nathan Jones’ men have only won two cup games in their last five, having beaten Lincoln City and Crystal Palace by 2-1 scorelines. As far as their league form goes, the Saints have been beaten 1-0, 2-1 and 3-1 by Nottingham Forest, Fulham and Brighton & Hove Albion.

City have been in strong form since the conclusion of the World Cup, having beaten Liverpool 3-2 in the last round of the League Cup, before beating Leeds United 3-1, drawing 1-1 at home to Everton and beating Chelsea 1-0 and 4-0 in back to back matches with Riyad Mahrez (2), Julian Alvarez and Phil Foden scoring in the Sky Blues most recent win against the latter mentioned opponent.
