How will Gonzalo Higuain's arrival impact Chelsea?

Chelsea are set to sign Argentina international Gonzalo Higuain on loan from Juventus until the end of the season.

The former Real Madrid striker is currently on a loan spell with fellow Serie A club AC Milan from Juventus, but he is now set to cut short his stay at San Siro.

The Blues made a formal loan bid for the striker in the last week and it has convinced him to depart AC Milan to join the West Londoners in what would be his first taste of the Premier League.

Higuain, now 31, would add experience and goals to a Chelsea front-line low on confidence, and he will replace a certain outgoing striker.

Here’s our assessment of the Higuain signing.

Why are Chelsea signing Higuain?

Quite simply, they’ve seen enough of Alvaro Morata. From the get-go in this January window, Chelsea have been offering out Alvaro Morata.

The Spaniard has endured a disappointing spell at Stamford Bridge, scoring just 16 goals in 47 league appearances, and the Blues have run out of patience.

As it stands, Atletico Madrid are the most interested party with Diego Costa out with injury, but they can’t fund a transfer.

The most likely scenario at this stage is that Morata joins Atletico on loan with an obligatory permanent signing at the end of the season.

One way or another, Chelsea want rid of the Spain international this month and that’s why they are hoping to wrap up the signing of Gonzalo Higuain, a similar-yet more reliable and experienced front-man.

What does Higuain bring?

Gonzalo Higuain is a seasoned forward with a wealth of experience. He’s played for some of the best teams in the world, including Real Madrid, Napoli, Juventus and now AC Milan.

He has been known as one of the best strikers in the world across his successful career, scoring 107 league goals in 190 appearances at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The 31-year-old scored 71 in 104 appearances for Napoli, 40 goals in 73 appearances for Napoli. Wherever he goes, he scores goals. He’s also managed 31 goals in 75 caps for Argentina.

He’s played at the highest level and he’s not short of self-confidence, unlike Alvaro Morata, who can’t buy a goal.

Higuain guarantees goals, he guarantees experiences and he guarantees Chelsea have a strike force worth fearing.

What can Chelsea achieve with Gonzalo Higuain?

Chelsea aren’t in contention for the league title, so this signing isn’t going to completely flip their league season.

However, with the Blues in contention for third place and with Tottenham lacking a striker in the absence of Harry Kane, it puts Maurizio Sarri's team in pole position should Higuain deliver.

The Blues were already one of the favourites to win the Europa League, and that’s only rubber-stamped with this signing. No transfer guarantees success, but there’s no doubting that they were lacking a striker like Higuain, and the Argentine should take them to the next level.

The Blues are also still in both domestic cup competitions, so they can still achieve a great deal this season. Top three and the Europa League will be at the top of their priority list, and Higuain can help them achieve that.

He’s a serial winner, but he will also have a chip on his shoulder with no European title to his name just yet.

In short, Chelsea needed a reliable striker and they are getting one from the very top drawer. This is some signing.
