In a group of potential dark horses, Peru and Chile need to secure a good opening win before they take on the likes of World Champions and Copa America holders Argentina and Canada.
Peru qualified automatically for the Copa America as a CONMEBOL nation, but they have a lot of history with the competition. Peru have made 34 appearances since their debut in the tournament all the way back in 1927.
The first title for Peru came back in 1939 where they won all four games to lift the trophy on home soil. The second and last title for Peru came in 1975 where they beat Brazil to make the Final where they beat Colombia in a Play-off after a draw in two legs.
Chile also qualified automatically for the Copa Americas as a CONMEBOL nation. Chile have made the fourth most appearances in the competition with 41 appearances since the first rendition of the competition in 1916.
Like Peru, Chile have two titles so far, these coming in consecutive tournaments in 2015 and 2016. In 2015 Chile beat Uruguay and Peru in the knock-out rounds to make the Final where they beat Argentina on penalties to win as the host nation. In 2016, Chile beat Mexico and Colombia in the knock-outs and once again beat Argentina on penalties in the Final.
Peru and Chile have met 85 times in their histories, with the first meeting coming back in the 1935 Copa America. Chile have the better record in the fixture with 47 wins in comparison to Peru’s 24 wins, the other 14 games ending in a draw.
In the last five games in this fixture there have been three wins for Chile and two wins for Peru. All five of the last five games have seen just one team on the scoresheet with a low scoreline.
