Denmark vs Norway: Preview, Prediction & Betting Tips

Denmark host Norway in an international friendly as their preparations for the upcoming European Championships draw to a close.

The Danes will be hoping to go one step further this time after they were eliminated by England in the semi-final of Euro 2020. This friendly against Norway will provide players a final chance to impress ahead of the tournament. They finished top of their qualifying group with 22 points from 10 games, and were drawn against England, Serbia and Slovenia, a group they will fancy their chances of progressing from.

Norway will provide a good test for Denmark, with the likes of Erling Haaland and Martin Odegaard amongst their ranks. They were unable to qualify for the competition themselves as they finished third in their group with 11 points from eight games. Through the last international break, they are winless in three, but won five of six before that, their only defeat coming against Spain.

Haaland of course is the main goal threat Denmark will have to look out for should he play. For Man City this season, he scored 27 goals in 31 Premier League matches. Defensively, Denmark have been inconsistent, keeping clean sheets in their last two, but these were the first in four games prior. On the other side for the hosts is striker Rasmus Hojlund, who enjoyed a solid debut campaign for Man United. The 21-year old scored 15 goals in all competitions and for his country, he scored seven goals in eight qualifying games. His United teammate Christian Eriksen will look to have a better tournament than he did season, as he scored just once in all competitions.

These two countries have played against each other 85 times, and it is Denmark who have been dominant. They have won 51 meetings and lost 22. They have won two in a row, and have not lost in five games, but they have not faced off since 2013. This was an international friendly, in which Denmark won 2-1. William Kvist put them ahead though this was cancelled out by Marcus Pedersen. Nicolai Boilesen scored the winner at the death.

Denmark

Celtic star Matt O’Riley was surprisingly omitted from the squad. Premier League representation comes from Man United’s Rasmus Hojlund and Christian Eriksen, whilst Brentford pair Christian Norgaard and Mikkel Damsgaard are also involved.

Norway

Norway’s squad is headlined by Premier League stars Erling Haaland and Martin Odegaard. Man City youngster Oscar Bobb will also hope to play a huge part.

Denmark

In their last four games, Denmark have won two, drawn one and lost one. It has been an inconsistent stretch for Denmark as they look ahead to the upcoming European Championships. This run started with the penultimate game of the qualifying group stage, as they took on Slovenia and won 2-1 at home. Joakim Maehle put them ahead after 26 minutes, but Slovenia responded almost immediately through Erik Janza with his side’s only shot on target. The winning goal came in the second half from Thomas Delaney.

They suffered their only defeat of this stretch away at Northern Ireland in the final group game, though they had already secured their place in the Euros. Denmark were far superior in possession with 80%, but were unable to take advantage of their opportunities. Northern Ireland had just two shots on target, and scored from both of them with the goals coming in the second half. Isaac Price and Dion Charles were on the scoresheet.

Two friendlies followed, the first of which being a goalless draw at home to Switzerland. It was a game with limited big chances, as the two sides combined for just four shots on target. Switzerland possessed slightly more of the ball, but neither were able to find the back of the net. Their latest game was a 2-0 victory over the Faroe Islands. Tottenham’s Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg scored an early first goal, before Mohamed Daramy doubled the lead in the second period. Before they take on Norway at the weekend, Denmark will host Sweden in another friendly on Wednesday night.

Norway

In their last four games, Norway have won one, lost one and drawn two. It has been a mixed stretch for Norway, but they missed out on Euros qualification after they finished third in their group. This run started with a comfortable 2-0 win over the Faroe Islands in a friendly. Jorgen Strand Larsen scored after just three minutes, before Manchester City youngster Oscar Bobb doubled the lead 20 minutes later. This is how the game ended as Norway dominated possession and restricted their opponents to just a single shot on target.

The final game of the qualifying group phase was a 3-3 draw away at Scotland. It was another quick start as Aron Donnum put the Norwegians ahead early. John McGinn equalised from the penalty spot shortly afterwards. Larsen restored the lead, but they were pegged back once more by a Leo Skiri Ostigard own goal. Stuart Armstrong gave Scotland their first lead of the evening, though Mohamed Elyounoussi found the leveller to ensure the points were shared. Their mini unbeaten run ended with a 2-1 home defeat to Czech Republic. Bobb broke the deadlock, but goals from David Zima and Antonin Barak either side of half time turned it around for the visitors.

Last time out Norway drew 1-1 with Slovakia. Alexander Sorloth scored to put them in front, but Ondrej Duda equalised in the 87th minute to come away with a draw. Before they travel to take on Denmark, Norway will host minnows Kosovo in another friendly on Wednesday night.

Denmark will be hoping to enter the Euros on a high, and will be given a decent test by Norway in preparation. As a result, we expect Norway to pick up a draw – Denmark 2-2 Norway
