4 Tips for Tuesday’s League Cup Semi-Final - 24/1/23

On Tuesday night, Southampton and Newcastle United go head to head in the League Cup semi-finals first-leg, with both sides looking for a positive result to give themselves the best possible chance of earning a trip to Wembley for the final.

The last time these two sides met in the Premier League was back in early November at St Mary’s, when the Magpies thrashed the Saints 4-1, thanks to goals by Miguel Almiron, Chris Wood, Joe Willock and Bruno Guimaraes, with Romain Perraud’s 89th minute goal being a late consolation.

As mentioned above, Newcastle won the last match-up between these two sides 4-1. Their other most recent meeting came at St Mary’s in March last year, where the Geordies earned a 2-1 victory as Wood and Guimaraes scored once again after Stuart Armstrong had given the Saints a 1-0 lead.

In Newcastle’s recent 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace, there were a total of six yellow cards shown across the match, with Kieran Trippier and Joelinton receiving both of the Magpies’ two bookings. Noticeably, Palace had three corners to Newcastle’s 15.

Southampton midfielder James Ward-Prowse has been one of the best performers in the Premier League despite of his side’s struggles.

The 28-year-old has scored seven goals across all competitions this campaign for the Saints and was unfortunate to see his strike ruled out against Aston Villa on the weekend due to a foul in the build-up to the goal.

Two strikers that will hope to help their sides’ chances of progression in this competition are Che Adams and Callum Wilson.

Adams is Southampton’s top scorer so far this campaign with eight goals in 23 matches, while also providing two assists. Meanwhile, Wilson has scored six and created three assists in 17 appearances.
