All-Time Top Scorers in Premier League History

The Premier League season starts next month and clubs will be hoping for another close clash for the title with just as many goals.

The 2023/24 season saw the record broken for the most goals in a 38 game Premier League season with a total of 1,246 goals across the 380 games.

This was a vast improvement on the previous record that saw 1,084 goals scored across the 380 games in the 2022/23 season.

Who are the top five Premier League top scorers?

Alan Shearer: 260 goals (Blackburn Rovers, Newcastle)

Alan Shearer is still the all-time top scorer for the Premier League. The forward started his Premier League career with Blackburn Rovers, where from 1992 to 1996 he scored 112 of his total 260 goals.

Shearer then made his move to Newcastle where he would eventually retire. However, this would not be without another 148 goals for The Magpies.

The Englishman was prolific in front of goal, scoring 283 goals throughout his entire career. However, across his impressive goal-scoring career, Shearer only won one Premier League title, this came back in 1995 with Blackburn.

Shearer also won the Premier League Golden Boot on three occasions, back-to-back across the 1994/95, 1995/96 and the 1996/67 seasons.

Harry Kane: 213 goals (Tottenham)

The man that has come closest to breaking Shearer’s record was Harry Kane during his time at Tottenham. The forward got to 213 goals in 320 appearances, only 47 goals from the record, but made his move over to Germany with Bayern Munich, where he is breaking scoring records.

Kane made his Premier League debut with Tottenham back in 2010, but would only hit his stride with playing time and finding the back of the net in 2014.

Since 2014, Kane didn’t have a season in the Premier League where he scored under 17 goals.

However, unlike everyone else in the top five top scorers in the Premier League, Kane is the only one to have never lifted the trophy, but he has picked up three Golden Boots.

Wayne Rooney: 208 goals (Everton and Manchester United)

Wayne Rooney made his professional debut in the Premier League at the age of 16 with Everton back in 2002. While at The Toffees, Rooney scored 15 goals in 67 appearances, but his true form would start with his move to Manchester United.

From 2004 to 2017, Rooney scored 183 goals for the Red Devils in 393 Premier League appearances. In this time Rooney never won the Golden Boot, but did win five Premier League titles.

Rooney was so consistent with his scoring that his worst season was the 2016/17 season where at the age of 31 he scored just five goals in 25 games.

Andy Cole: 187 goals (Newcastle, Manchester United, Blackburn, Fulham, Manchester City and Portsmouth)

Andy Cole had a long career in the Premier League across six different teams and 13 years.

Cole started his goalscoring in the Premier League with Newcastle where he scored 34 goals in 40 games in the first season of the league rebrand and winning the Golden Boot. The next season saw him play just 18 games, but he still found the back of the net nine times.

At Manchester United, Cole scored 93 goals in 195 games, winning five Premier League titles.

His stint with Blackburn saw him bag 27 goals over three seasons. In one season each with Fulham, Manchester City and Portsmouth, Cole grabbed 24 more goals.

Sergio Aguero: 184 goals (Manchester City)

Sergio Ageuro made his move from Atletico Madrid to Manchester City back in 2012, and since then the Argentine made 275 appearances in the Premier League and scored 184 goals.

At Manchester City, Aguero won five Premier League titles and one Premier League Golden Boot. However, of everyone in the top five scorers in the Premier League, Ageuro hit his mark in just 284 games.
