Bournemouth vs Everton: Preview & Prediction

Bournemouth host Everton in the Premier League, looking to build on an impressive season as they battle for European football.

Date: 04/01/24

Kick-off time: 15:00

Venue: Vitality Stadium

It has been a strong campaign for Bournemouth so far as they are well in contention for a European place. They are currently seventh and are unbeaten in their last seven games, including four victories. With 30 points from 19 games, they are just five points behind Chelsea in fourth. A win at home this weekend would ensure they keep pace with those around them or even climb the table.

Everton, in contrast, are battling at the other end of the table. A home defeat to Nottingham Forest last time out was their first loss in four games. This was a run which included three consecutive draws against Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City. However, this stretch only saw them create two points in separation between themselves and the relegation zone, meaning they are still nervously looking over their shoulders.

Goals may be at a premium in this game due to the strong defence of the visitors. Everton conceded two at the weekend, but only one in the four games prior. Bournemouth have scored eight goals in their last five games, though only one has come at home. It could give the edge to Sean Dyche’s side who have shown they can keep clean sheets.

At the other end, Everton have had struggles going forward. They have scored just 15 goals this season, which is only better than bottom side Southampton. Despite their strong defensive stats, they have found the back of the net just once in the last four. The Cherries have kept three clean sheets in the last six, and should be confident in shutting out another team. The Toffees’ offensive issues are highlighted by the fact their top scorer is Iliman Ndiaye with three goals.

These two teams have met six times in the Premier League since 2020. Bournemouth have got the better of Everton four times, losing on the other two occasions. In all competitions, the Cherries have won six of the last eight fixtures between the pair. They are on a two-game winning streak, including a victory in the reverse fixture earlier this season at Goodison Park. It was a dramatic comeback 3-2 win, in which they overcame a two-goal deficit at 87 minutes. Luis Sinisterra scored the 96th minute winner.

Where to Watch

Bournemouth vs Everton will not be available to watch on TV in the UK.

Team News

Bournemouth

Justin Kluivert is available to return after serving a one-game suspension for an accumulation of five yellow cards. Bournemouth could be given huge boost with the returns of Luis Sinisterra and Alex Scott, who have been out with long-term injuries. Marcus Tavernier and Adam Smith remain sidelined alongside Julian Araujo and Marcos Senesi.

Everton

Seamus Coleman and Dwight McNeil could return after brief absences. Timothy Iroegbunam and James Garner are targeting mid-January returns. Sean Dyche should have a full squad to choose from otherwise.

Form Guide

Bournemouth:

In their last five games, Bournemouth have won two and drawn three. It has been a decent stretch for the Cherries in recent weeks as they are unbeaten in this period. The first game of this run was a 2-1 away win at Ipswich. Conor Chaplin had given the hosts the lead in the first half, but a dramatic finish saw the Cherries steal all three points. Enes Unal equalised in the 87th minute, before Dango Ouattara netted the winner deep into stoppage time.

A 1-1 draw at home to West Ham followed. The Hammers thought they won it late on with a Lucas Paqueta penalty, but a sublime free-kick from Unal shortly after ensured the points were shared. A huge 3-0 win at Old Trafford was perhaps their biggest victory of the season as they comfortably dispatched of Manchester United. Dean Huijsen, Justin Kluivert and Antoine Semenyo were on the scoresheet.

On Boxing Day, Bournemouth hosted Crystal Palace. They were held to a goalless draw as the Cherries were wasteful with their chances. At the weekend, they faced Fulham on the road, where they drew 2-2. They had to come from behind twice, with goals coming from Evanilson and Ouattara, who equalised in the 89th minute.

Everton:

In their last five games, Everton have won one, lost one and drawn three. It has been a solid stretch for the Toffees, despite playing against some tough opponents. This run started with a 4-0 win at home against Wolves. Ashley Young and Orel Mangala put them 2-0 up at half-time, before a pair of own goals from Craig Dawson completed the scoring. Next, a trip to the Emirates resulted in a huge point, with Everton holding Arsenal to a goalless draw.

Chelsea were their next opponents at home and another strong display ended with another stalemate. Both teams had excellent chances to take three points but neither could find the breakthrough.

On Boxing Day they faced a trip to struggling Man City. They drew a third consecutive game, holding their hosts to a 1-1 draw. Bernardo Silva had given City the lead, but Iliman Ndiaye levelled the score before the break. Erling Haaland had the chance to put his side in front in the second half, but his penalty kick was saved by Jordan Pickford. Last time out, they hosted Nottingham Forest, where they lost 2-0 with goals in either half from Chris Wood and Morgan Gibbs-White.
