Bournemouth vs Tottenham: Preview & Prediction

Bournemouth host Tottenham in the Premier League, with both teams looking for a win to boost their European chances.

Date: 05/12/24

Kick-off time: 20:15

Venue: Vitality Stadium

Andoni Iraola’s Bournemouth side may have Europe in their sights after a solid start to the season. The Cherries currently occupy 13th place, but trail the top four positions by just five points. After two consecutive losses, the hosts recovered in their most recent game with a big 4-2 win at Wolves to keep within reach of the European places. Another victory here would see them overtake their opponents in the table.

Tottenham have had a rollercoaster of a season, with lows such as losing to Ipswich at home, and highs like beating Man City 4-0 at the Etihad. Six wins and five defeats have them in 7th and well in contention for a Champions League place. Another victory this week would keep them within reach of the sides above, or even leapfrog them should results go their way. However, with how congested the table is, dropped points could see them fall significantly.

Goals are never a rarity for Spurs, and they are the league’s top scorers this season with 28 goals. This should continue against a Bournemouth side who tend to leak goals, with at least two goals conceded in their last three games. The visitors will have to be careful, though, as The Cherries have already recorded some big wins at home. This includes victories against both Arsenal and Man City.

There is plenty of talent at both ends, with Evanilson settling into his role at his new club. The Brazilian has now scored four for Bournemouth, joint with Antoine Semenyo and one behind Justin Kluivert for the team. They will look to get joy against a defence who have kept one clean sheet in their last seven. For Spurs, they have spread out their goals well, with Brennan Johnson and James Maddison leading the way with six and five respectively. The latter has picked up form in recent games, a welcome sight for Ange Postecoglu. Heung-Min Son and Dominic Solanke also pose significant threats for Bournemouth to contain.

These two teams have met 14 times in the Premier League since Bournemouth’s promotion in 2015. Unsurprisingly, Spurs have the superior record, losing just twice in this period. Only one of these came at the Vitality when The Cherries won 1-0 at home in 2019. Last season, Spurs did the double over their opponents, winning 3-1 at home after recording a 2-0 victory on their travels earlier in the season. James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski were on the scoresheet.

Form Guide

Bournemouth:

In their last five games, Bournemouth have won two, lost two and drawn one. It has been a mixed stretch for The Cherries in recent weeks. The first game of this run saw them record an impressive point away at Aston Villa. Ross Barkley had given the hosts the lead, but Evanilson salvaged a draw with a 96th minute equaliser.

They picked up a win in the next game against Man City at home. They were 2-1 winners against the champions after Antoine Semenyo and Evanilson put them ahead. Josko Gvardiol’s goal came too late for City to mount a comeback. Bournemouth couldn’t continue this momentum as they lost 3-2 at Brentford. The visitors took the lead twice through Evanilson and Justin Kluivert, but the Bees fought back both times before scoring the winner with over half an hour to go.

A second loss in a row occurred at home to Brighton. They were defeated 2-1 after Joao Pedro and Kaoru Mitoma put The Seagulls ahead. Despite a red card for the visitors in the second half, Bournemouth could not get on the board until stoppage time through David Brooks. Their most recent game was a trip to Wolves. They were 4-2 winners, going ahead 2-1 after just eight minutes. Kluivert scored a hat-trick, all from the penalty spot.

Tottenham:

In their last five games, Tottenham have won one, lost two and drawn two. It has been an inconsistent stretch for Spurs, and has included some shocking results. This run started with Europa League action, where they fell to a 3-2 defeat at Galatasaray. Will Lankshear cancelled out an earlier opener from the hosts, before getting sent off in the second half. Victor Osimhen netted a brace to make it 3-1. Dominic Solanke pulled one back but they could not complete the comeback.

Their losing form extended into the Premier League as they were condemned to a shock defeat at home to Ipswich before the international break. Sammie Szmodics and Liam Delap put the visitors in front before Rodrigo Bentancur halved the deficit. However, upon their return they faced Man City and were convincing 4-0 winners. Maddison scored a brace, before goals from Pedro Porro and Johnson completed the rout.

Attention shifted back to Europe for a tie against Roma. They drew 2-2 after squandering a lead twice, including in second half stoppage time. Last time out they hosted Fulham, in which they drew 1-1. Brennan Johnson’s opener was cancelled out by Tom Cairney, who was later sent off. Spurs were unable to capitalise on the extra man advantage.
