Brighton vs Brentford: Preview & Prediction

Brighton host Brentford in the Premier League, with both sides looking to recover from disappointing results last weekend.

Date: 27/12/24

Kick-off time: 19:30

Venue: Amex Stadium

After a very strong start to the season, Brighton have cooled off as of late. The Seagulls are winless in their last five games, including two defeats and three draws. Their recent form has seen them drop to 10th in the table, but they still remain just six points off the top four. A win this week would keep them within touching distance of the European places.

Brentford have fallen into the bottom half of the table after consecutive defeats. Their latest loss was significant as it was their first defeat at home all season. The Bees had held the league’s best home record to their 2-0 loss to Nottingham Forest. They are still in 12th, two points behind their upcoming opponents, though this is due to their form on home soil. On the road, Brentford are still yet to record a win, and only Southampton have picked up fewer points away from home.

Goals should be a feature in this game, especially as Brentford are amongst the league’s top scorers with 32. However, they have also conceded 32, and this should give the hosts confidence in getting back on track. Brighton have several attackers who could cause damage, including Danny Welbeck and Joao Pedro, who have combined for 10 goals this season. Thomas Frank’s side have not kept a clean sheet in any of their last five league games.

Both teams will likely get on the scoresheet, as Brighton have also shown vulnerabilities in recent weeks. In their last five games, they have conceded 10 times, with three coming in their latest home fixture against Crystal Palace. The Bees have a fearsome attacking duo of Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa, who have scored 10 and nine goals respectively.

Since 2021, these two sides have met six times in the Premier League. Brighton have the edge with three wins to Brentford’s one and two draws. The Bees are winless in the last three meetings, with a defeat sandwiched between a couple of draws. The latest meeting was a goalless draw towards the end of last season at the Gtech Community Stadium. Brighton won the reverse fixture 2-1 at home as they came from behind with goals from Pascal Gross and Jack Hinshelwood.

Team News

Brighton

Danny Welbeck has been absent in recent games due to an ankle injury, but the hope is that he can return in this game. Ferdi Kadioglu and Jack Hinshelwood could also return to the lineup.

Brentford

Brentford could be given a boost by the return of Mathias Jensen who has been out with a thigh injury. Aaron Hickey, Rico Henry and Ethan Pinnock all remain out.

Form Guide

Brighton

In their last five games, Brighton have drawn three and lost two. It has been a difficult stretch for Brighton as they have struggled for wins. This run started with a 1-1 draw against bottom side Southampton. Kaoru Mitoma gave them the lead after half an hour, but they were pegged back in the second half through a Flynn Downes strike.

A defeat at Fulham followed as they were on the end of a 3-1 scoreline. Alex Iwobi broke the deadlock for the hosts after just four minutes, though Carlos Baleba got the Seagulls back on level terms shortly after the half-time break. Fulham took over in the latter stages, with a Matt O’Riley own goal and Iwobi finish sealing the three points.

Brighton’s struggles continued with a 2-2 draw at relegation battling Leicester. They were 2-0 up at 80 minutes thanks to goals from Tariq Lamptey and Yankuba Minteh. However, the Foxes battled back for a point through Jamie Vardy and Bobby De Cordova Reid. A home game against rivals Crystal Palace saw another defeat, losing 3-1. Palace took a 3-0 lead despite Brighton’s dominance, before a late consolation. Last time out, they faced West Ham on the road. They drew 1-1 again as Mohammed Kudus cancelled out Mats Wieffer’s opener.

Brentford

In their last five games, Brentford have won one and lost four. It has been a poor stretch for Brentford, which has highlighted their issues away from home. This run started with a trip to Aston Villa, where they lost 3-1. Villa took a 3-0 lead into the break, before Damsgaard pulled one back shortly after the restart. However, this was as good as it got for the Bees.

A return home saw them record an impressive 4-2 win over Newcastle. Brentford were pegged back twice after taking the lead, but goals from Nathan Collins and Kevin Schade earned the win in the second half. West London rivals Chelsea were their next opponents as they lost once more on the road. Marc Cucurella and Nicolas Jackson both scored before a late consolation from Bryan Mbeumo.

Attention shifted to Carabao Cup action as they faced Newcastle away. They were eliminated with a 3-1 loss with goals from Sandro Tonali (x2) and Fabian Schar putting them into a 3-0 hole. Last time out they hosted Nottingham Forest, and they were defeated for the first time at home as they lost 2-0. Ola Aina and Anthony Elanga were the goalscorers.
