Brighton vs Southampton: Preview & Prediction

Brighton welcome Southampton to the Amex as they face off in the Premier League, with both sides competing at opposing ends of the table.

Date: 29/11/24

Kick-off time: 20:00

Venue: Amex Stadium

It has been a very impressive season so far for Brighton under new manager Fabian Hurzeler, with the side occupying fifth place after 12 games. They are level on 22 points with Chelsea and Arsenal, who are in the top four. The Seagulls have lost just twice, those defeats coming against Liverpool and Chelsea. They will expect to record victory in this game, and should they do so, they would cement their standing as a European contender.

Southampton have endured a nightmare return to the Premier League, sitting at the bottom of the table with four points. They will be disappointed not to have come away with at least a point in their latest game against Liverpool, having gifted their visitors three goals. The loss means they are five points adrift from safety and another defeat would plunge them into further trouble.

The hosts have been dangerous in front of goal, with their 21 goals scored bettered by just five other teams. They will be confident in adding to this tally against the league’s second-worst defence. Danny Welbeck leads the team with six goals, and they have been boosted by the return of Joao Pedro in recent weeks. The Brazilian scored in last weekend’s victory over Bournemouth.

Russell Martin’s team scored twice against Liverpool’s strong defence, which could give them optimism heading into this weekend. Mateus Fernandes has emerged as a key man in midfield and scored his first goal of the campaign last time out. Tyler Dibling has also announced himself as a dangerous threat, even without the goal contributions. The side as a whole have struggled, scoring nine in total, however Brighton have not kept a clean sheet in any of their last five games in all competitions.

This will be the seventh Premier League meeting between these two sides since 2020. Brighton have been the superior side in recent years and are unbeaten in five games. The last time they met was in the 22/23 season, as the Seagulls did the double over their opponents. They won both games 3-1, with a double from Evan Ferguson and strike from Pascal Gross sealing the win at home.

Team News

Brighton

Carlos Baleba will be suspended after picking up two yellow cards last weekend. Ferdi Kadioglu suffered an injury before the international break but the hope is that he can return for this game. Lewis Dunk, Adam Webster, Tariq Lamptey and Jack Hinshelwood are also set for returns.

Southampton

Jan Bednarek and Aaron Ramsdale are out for a few weeks with injury, and Alex McCarthy will likely deputise in place of the latter. Will Smallbone remains out but is nearing a return in early December.

Form Guide

Brighton:

In their last five games, Brighton have won two, lost two and drawn one. It has been a solid stretch for the Seagulls in recent weeks, with the latest result a 2-1 win at Bournemouth. Joao Pedro and Kaoru Mitoma were their goalscorers. Before the international break they pulled off a huge come-from-behind win at home to Man City. Erling Haaland had given the Champions the lead, but two goals in the space of five minutes from Joao Pedro and Matt O’Riley gave the Seagulls a late win.

That followed a pair of defeats against Liverpool in the EFL Cup and Premier League. They were eliminated in the fourth round of the Cup after a 3-2 loss. Liverpool took a 2-0 lead before the Seagulls pulled one back, then the two teams exchanged goals once more. The Premier League fixture saw them defeated 2-1 at Anfield. Ferdi Kadıoğlu opened the scoring for Brighton, but two goals in as many minutes in the second half turned the game on its head.

This run started with a 2-2 draw as they squandered a two-goal lead to drop points against Wolves. Welbeck continued his good form with the opener, before Evan Ferguson doubled the lead late on. However, Wolves pulled one back with two minutes to go, before Matheus Cunha equalised in stoppage time.

Southampton:

In their last five games, Southampton have won two and lost three. After a disastrous start to the season, the Saints have picked up a couple of wins in recent weeks. However, this run started with defeat at Premier League Champions Man City. They only lost 1-0, with the winner coming from Erling Haaland.

Attention shifted to EFL Cup action, and they advanced to the Quarter-Finals with a 3-2 win over Championship side Stoke City. They were 2-0 up at the break, but were pegged back in the second half, before James Bree scored an 88th minute winner. Southampton finally recorded their first league win of the season with a 1-0 victory over Everton. Adam Armstrong was the scorer of the decisive goal.

They were unable to continue this momentum as they fell to a 2-0 defeat at Wolves. Pablo Sarabia and Matheus Cunha were the scorers. Last time out they hosted leaders Liverpool. They lost 3-2, despite taking a 2-1 lead. Armstrong and Mateus Fernandes turned it round after a Dominik Szoboszlai opener, but a brace from Mo Salah put the game back in the visitors’ favour.
