Tottenham vs Newcastle: Preview & Prediction

Tottenham host Newcastle in the Premier League, with the visitors looking to heap more pressure on the home side and build on a dominant stretch of form.

      Date: 04/01/24

      Kick-off time: 12:30

      Venue: Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

Ange Postecoglou is feeling the heat as Spurs boss with the club winning just once in their last seven league games. After a 2-2 draw at home to Wolves last time out, they are now winless in three which leaves them in 11th place. With 24 points, Spurs are six points behind seventh, and 11 behind the top four. A win could see them enter the top half, but defeat may see them fall as low as 14th.

They will be facing a red-hot Newcastle side who are closing in on fourth. They are winners of four league games in a row, leaving them just three points behind Chelsea. The Magpies have been in excellent form, which includes two consecutive road wins. Their most recent game was a 2-0 win at Old Trafford, moving them up three places in the table.

The hosts will have to work hard to find goals as they face a defence which has kept four clean sheets in a row. The last time Newcastle conceded a league goal was in a 4-2 defeat at Brentford at the beginning of December. However, Tottenham are the league’s second-highest scorers with 41 goals. This includes 10 in the last four. James Maddison now leads the team with eight goals, closely followed by Brennan Johnson’s seven.

Defensively is where Spurs struggle, recording just one clean sheet in their last seven. At home, they have allowed 12 in their last three. This should give the away side much confidence in getting on the scoresheet and picking up three points, as they have scored 13 unanswered in their last four. Alexander Isak is a key component of this success, scoring six in this run. He has netted 11 times overall on the season.

There have been 10 meetings between these two sides since 2020. Both teams have won four games each, but more recently it has been Newcastle who have been superior. The Magpies have won four of the last five games, including a 2-1 win at Spurs in 2022. This weekend’s visitors won the reverse fixture earlier this season, with a 2-1 home victory at St James’ Park. Harvey Barnes and Isak scored either side of a Dan Burn own goal.

Attention then shifted to Carabao Cup action as Spurs hosted Man United in the quarter-final. They advanced with a 4-3 win, after taking a 3-0 lead. Goalkeeping errors got United back in the game, but an insurance goal from a corner by Son secured the victory. Another home game followed, and they were emphatically beaten 6-3 at home to Liverpool. They then faced Brentford in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup. Newcastle advanced to the semis with a 3-1 win. Sandro Tonali scored a brace before Fabian Schar added a third. Yoane Wissa netted a late consolation. A trip to Ipswich followed. They were comprehensive 4-0 winners, as Isak scored a hat-trick in addition to another Murphy goal.
