Three strikers who have flopped at Chelsea

Chelsea are about to snap up their newest striker with Gonzalo Higuain set to join the Blues on a loan deal until the end of the season.

Higuain’s loan deal with AC Milan is going to be cancelled in order for the Argentine to join Chelsea until the end of the season.

And it could be a brave choice for the former Real Madrid striker given the London side's recent record of signing forwards. Their latest example is the outgoing Alvaro Morata, the man who makes space for Gonzalo Higuain himself.

Higuain arrives hoping to avoid becoming the latest flop at Stamford Bridge, but who are the strikers whose arrivals at Stamford Bridge haven’t gone to plan?

Here are three strikers who have flopped at Chelsea following headline-making moves.

Andriy Shevchenko

Perhaps Chelsea’s biggest flop of recent times, Shevchenko signed for Chelsea from AC Milan in 2016 for over £60 million after winning the Serie A and Champions League.

He spent three years at Stamford Bridge, making just 48 league appearances and scoring just nine league goals. He had scored 127 in 208 appearances at AC Milan.

He only actually spent to of his three years at Chelsea with the final year being spent on loan back at AC Milan, where he failed to register a single league goal in 18 appearances.

It all went downhill for Shevchenko after his big-money move from AC Milan, returning to native club Dynamo Kyiv in 2009 to end his Stamford Bridge nightmare.

The Ukrainian retired in 2012 after three years back in his home country. He’s now in charge of the Ukraine national team.

Fernando Torres

In terms of Fernando Torres’ career, it all depends how you frame it. In terms of sheer goals, his £50 million move from Liverpool in 2011 didn’t go so well.

He scored just 20 goals league goals in 110 league appearances.

However, he enjoyed a fine spell with the Blues in terms of trophies, winning the FA Cup, Champions League and Europa League, scoring some rather important goals along the way.

Torres spent three years with Chelsea before joining AC Milan on loan and then departing on a permanent one year later.

He didn’t make a single appearance for AC Milan after joining for good, going on to enjoy a loan spell with Atletico Madrid.

Following his return to Atletico, he joined on a permanent after a year, and he now plays for Sagan Tosu in Japan.

Torres disappointed in front of goal for Chelsea, but his career was a huge success. He’s won the World Cup, two European Championships, a champions League, two Europa Leagues and an FA Cup. That’s an honour list most players dream of.

Alvaro Morata

The second Spaniard on the list is Alvaro Morata. He’s still technically a Blue, but despite only joining from Real Madrid for £60 million in 2011, he’s being offered out to just about every club in Europe.

Chelsea will take what they can get for him following his dreadful spell in Stamford Bridge. He has just 16 goals in 47 league games, winning only the FA Cup since during his time in the English capital.

Morata’s will have hoped to build up a video reel of great goals at Chelsea, but he’ll leave with a video reel of embarrassing misses.

Morata’s time at Chelsea has been a total failure.
