Inter Miami vs. Columbus Crew: Preview, Prediction & Betting Tips

This Thursday, Inter Miami will host Columbus Crew in a highly anticipated Major League Soccer (MLS) encounter. Both teams are in promising positions within the Eastern Conference, and the match promises to be an exciting contest between two in-form sides.

            Date: 20/06/2024

            Kick-off time: 00:30

            Location: Chase Stadium, Miami

Inter Miami have enjoyed a stellar season so far, sitting comfortably at the top of the Eastern Conference with 38 points from 19 games. Their impressive form has largely lived up to the high expectations set at the beginning of the season. Managed by Gerardo Martino, the team has demonstrated a fine balance between attack and defence, contributing to their top-of-the-table status.

In attack, Inter Miami have been solid, netting 28 goals in their 19 matches. This offensive output has been spearheaded by two of their marquee signings, Lionel Messi and Luis Suárez. Messi, who has been nothing short of spectacular, boasts an impressive tally of 12 goals and 9 assists from just 12 games. Suárez, not far behind, has contributed 12 goals and 5 assists in 16 appearances. The duo's chemistry on the pitch has been a key factor in Inter Miami's attacking success, often turning tight games in their favour.

Defensively, Inter Miami have been exceptional, conceding only 16 goals thus far. This defensive solidity has been crucial in securing vital points throughout the season. Martino’s tactical acumen and ability to organise his defence effectively have been pivotal, enabling the team to maintain their top spot.

Columbus Crew, the defending MLS champions, find themselves in 6th place in the Eastern Conference with 27 points from 15 games. Although they have played fewer games than most of the teams around them, their current position indicates a solid start to their title defence. With games in hand, Columbus will be keen to capitalise and climb further up the table.

Defensively, Columbus Crew have been formidable, conceding just 15 goals in 15 games. This strong defensive record has been the foundation of their campaign, allowing them to stay competitive in most matches. Offensively, they have been equally impressive, scoring 24 goals in the same period. Their balanced approach to both attack and defence underlines their potential to challenge the top teams in the conference.

Under the guidance of manager Wilfried Nancy, Columbus have managed to maintain a level of consistency that is crucial for a title-defending team. However, they have recently faced a significant setback with the departure of their star midfielder, Aidan Morris. Morris, who has been their standout player this season, recently signed with Championship club Middlesbrough. His absence will undoubtedly be felt, and it will be interesting to see how Nancy adapts his midfield strategy to cope with this loss.

In recent encounters between Inter Miami and Columbus Crew, Inter Miami have had a slight edge, winning two of the last five matches while Columbus have managed only one victory. The most recent clash between these two sides ended in a thrilling 2-2 draw, highlighting the competitive nature of their contests.

Tactically, this match will be an intriguing battle between two experienced managers. Gerardo Martino’s approach with Inter Miami has been to maintain a solid defensive structure while allowing his star forwards the freedom to express themselves in attack. This strategy has paid dividends, as evidenced by their strong defensive record and efficient goal-scoring.

As Inter Miami prepare to host Columbus Crew, both teams will be eager to secure all three points for different reasons. Inter Miami will aim to extend their lead at the top of the table, consolidating their position as the team to beat in the Eastern Conference. Columbus Crew, meanwhile, will look to leverage their games in hand and move up the standings, reaffirming their credentials as reigning champions.

            Team News

            Inter Miami Team News:

Inter Miami have been dealt a huge blow as star men Lionel Messi and Luis Suárez are away with Argentina and Uruguay respectively at the Copa América and therefore unavailable.

Nicolas Freire and Facundo Farias are both out with injury, while Robbie Robinson is a major doubt.

            Columbus Crew Team News:

It's still not clear whether or not midfielder Aidan Morris has played his last game for the club with his departure to Middlesbrough imminent.

Evan Bush is a doubt, while Jacen Russell-Rowe is away with Canada on international duty.

            Form Guide

Inter Miami are coming into this game off the back of a dramatic win. Tata Martino's men travelled to Philadelphia to take on the Union last time out, and after falling behind in the game after just three minutes things were not looking promising. However, Julian Gressel drew them level on 47 minutes after some huffing and puffing from the visitors, and at that point it looked like they would go on to take the win.

That work was soon undone, though, as David Ruiz was shown a red card on 68 minutes, with things going from bad to worse as the side from Florida were reduced to nine men as Tomás Avilés was given his marching orders after 84 minutes. But, against all the odds, Inter Miami won the game in dramatic fashion thanks to a 94th-minute goal from Leo Afonso.

The win keeps Inter Miami ticking over in the absence of their start men, as they come into this game in good form with three wins, one draw and one defeat from their last five games.

Columbus Crew's latest outing saw them travel to New York to face NYCFC, and the pendulum swung in their favour after 39 minutes as the home side were reduced to ten men. Columbus did not capitalise on this straight away, though, and fell behind on the stroke of half-time as Agustín Ojeda put NYCFC in front.

Columbus did not mess about following the half-time break, though, and quickly equalised through Christian Ramirez, with Mohamed Farsi then making it 2-1 on 53 minutes. Cucho Hernández sealed the three points with a penalty and despite the home side pulling a goal back they held on for a 3-2 win.

The win means Columbus have now won four and lost one of their last five games.
