Newcastle vs Brighton Prediction

Both sides enter the 5th Round of the FA Cup somewhat distracted by league matches; sitting 6th and 8th respectively, both have high hopes for a place in a European competition next season and their managers could well see the FA Cup as a risk that outweighs the potential reward.

The two teams have been inconsistent in recent matches, mixing awful defensive displays with excellent attacking ones. A high scoring match looks on the cards based on recent results, and we feel Newcastle have the squad depth to take the win here and progress to the next round. Newcastle 2 - Brighton 1.

Newcastle vs Brighton Preview & Prediction

Newcastle will be looking to rebound off a disappointing 2-0 defeat to Liverpool in the Premier League midweek; a worrying encounter for the Magpies ahead of their rematch in the Carabao Cup final next month.

Date: Sun 2nd March 2025

Location: St James Park, Newcastle

Time: 1:45pm

The home team have blown hot and cold in recent weeks, which is perhaps not surprising with the attention that was placed on the two legged Carabao Cup semi final against Arsenal and the possibility of major silverware for the first time since 1969.

They can be forgiven the defeat by runaway league leaders Liverpool last time out, and prior to that they dismantled Nottingham Forest within 45 minutes. The impressive performance was diminished slightly by a lax approach to defending in the final minutes, giving their opposition half a chance, but in truth Newcastle were deserved winners.

This FA Cup match could see them rotate in key bench players such as Harvey Barnes, Kieran Trippier and Lewis Miley, all of whom will see themselves as deserved Premier League starters and will be keen to put in a performance to achieve this.

Visitors Brighton appear to have turned a corner after a disappointing December, where they lost two and drew their other five matches. They have now won their last 4 matches in a row, and were good value for their victory over Chelsea in the previous round of this competition.

They weathered significant pressure last time out vs Bournemouth to take a 2-1 victory, giving up multiple chances in the box. It is more than possible they will miss the presence of stalwart centre back Lewis Dunk, and they may need to play a slightly make shift defensive line here to protect against the risk of injuries.

Where to Watch Newcastle vs Brighton

The match will be broadcast live on ITV1 in England & Wales, and can be streamed online on ITVX. In Scotland, it will be shown live on STV and online on the STV Player.

Team News

Newcastle

Alexander Isak was a surprise omission from the squad on Wednesday vs Liverpool, and could well be absent again on Sunday as he recovers from a minor groin injury.

Sven Botman is closer to a return, but unlikely to be risked from the start even if fit, while Jamal Lascelles and Joelinton are still weeks away from their respective returns.

Brighton & Hove Albion

Joel Veltman is likely to miss out, with manager Fabian Hurzeler describing the defender as "very doubtful" in his press conference this week. Lewis Dunk is also likely to miss out again, while James Milner, Igor & Kadioglu all remain long term absentees.

Recent Form

Newcastle disappointed last time out, losing 2-0 to Liverpool in a toothless display which saw their front line struggle to create any clear cut chances. Alexander Isak was the big name missing from the line up, having just put in a man of the match display three days earlier in their 4-3 win over Nottingham Forest.

The Magpies scored four goals in 11 first half minutes that day, with two being scored by the Swedish striker, and he is a near impossible man to replace with the form he is currently showing.

They qualified for this round by defeating high flying League One Birmingham 3-2 away from home. Despite falling behind early - to a first minute goal by ex Manchester United player Ethan Laird - they turned it around to lead 2-1 in the first half, thanks to two assists by William Osula who impressed throughout. After Birmingham equalised, Joe Willock grabbed the late winner in the 82nd minute.

Brighton, as mentioned, saw off Premier League opposition in the previous round, beating Chelsea 2-1. That match was effectively replayed six days later - but in the Premier League instead of the FA Cup - and Brighton's 3-0 win was the start of an unbeaten three game run which also saw them beat lowly Southampton 4-0 and Bournemouth 2-1.

The Chelsea win as more remarkable in that it followed an unexpected 7-0 hammering by Nottingham Forest. Brighton fell apart defensively, and all seven goals were scored from inside the penalty area, showing how much space and time Forest were given.
