Plymouth Argyle face Sutton United in the FA Cup this weekend and both sides with fancy their chances.
Fresh off the back of a promotion from League One last time out, Plymouth Argyle are have a tough acclimation to life in the Championship as they find themselves down in the bottom half of the league table and on the edge of the relegation battle.
They lost manager Stephen Schumacher to Stoke City just a few weeks back so they’re still waiting to appoint a permanent replacement, but they’re coming into this game in pretty poor form having won only one of their last seven games.
Their latest outing saw them held to a 3-3 draw at home to Watford, with goals from Finn Azaz, Morgan Whittaker and Ryan Hardie enough to seal a point.
It wasn’t a bad point by any means and they’ll probably feel they were good value for more given they registered thirty-one shots on goal. However, a point was all they got and they now continue their search for a much-needed win.
Their most recent FA Cup game saw them hammered 5-1 away at Grimsby Town but prior to that they’d delivered some solid showings in this competition with three wins from their prior four games.
Their last two games in this round of the competition have both ended in victory, and given this is a home game against a lower-league opponent this should be no different.
Sutton United are having a tough season in League Two and come into this game deep inside the relegation zone in 23rd place.
Their form has been very poor too, as they enter this game having won just one of their last five games, the most recent of which was a 1-1 draw at home to Newport County in a result that could have been much worse had Tope Fadahunsi not equalised in the 90th minute.
They’ve already played twice in the FA Cup this season, beating Fylde 2-1 before registering a 3-0 win over Horsham.
Their form away from home has been uninspiring too, with Sutton having failed to win any of their last twelve games on the road.
Sutton haven’t faced a Championship side in this competition since 2017 where they beat Leeds United 1-0 on home soil, so they’ll be hoping to recreate that occasion here.
It’s unlikely, though, as they simply don’t seem in good enough shape to pull off a shock away from home of that magnitude.
For our Plymouth vs. Sutton prediction, we’re going for a 2-1 win for the home side.
