This weekend, the relegation battle in League Two intensifies as Forest Green Rovers host Sutton United at The New Lawn. Both sides find themselves precariously close to the drop zone, making this a six-pointer clash with immense consequences.
Following a couple of good results, Forest Green have managed to lift themselves outside of the relegation zone and are currently sitting in 22nd position in the league. Rovers are just one point above Colchester and have played two more games than the U’s so they will need to continue this good run of form if they wish to avoid the drop.
Steve Cotterill’s side come into this weekend on the back of consecutive league victories over Walsall and Bradford City, sides who are both fighting for a spot in the playoffs. Forest green did not concede a goal in either of these games highlighting the improvement in their defence.
In contrast to the hosts, Sutton come into this game on the back of a poor run of form and they are currently sitting at the bottom of the table having gained just 27 points from their 38 league games so far this season.
Steve Morison’s side have won just one of their last fifteen league games and are six points off safety, having played more games than all of the teams that are directly above them.
Sutton suffered another frustrating defeat on Tuesday evening as Crewe narrowly won 1-0. Early injury to Crewe's striker forced a substitution. The game was scrappy with few chances until Nevitt's 71st-minute winner.
Forest Green Rovers and Sutton United's rivalry is a relatively young one, dating back to just 2021 when Sutton earned promotion to League Two. In total, the two sides have met on just three occasions, with Forest Green having won two and one game resulting in a draw.
It was Forest Green who recorded a narrow 1-0 victory when these sides met in the reverse fixture earlier on in the campaign. The only goal of the game came just after the hour mark from Forest Green's Harvey Bunker.
Despite Sutton's positive performance in the Carabao Cup just days prior, they struggled to create clear-cut chances throughout the match. Sutton's best opportunities were thwarted by several impressive saves from Forest Green keeper Jack Rose.
It is the home side who are favoured at the bookies ahead of this weekend’s meeting and they are currently priced @ 5/4, whilst an away win for Sutton is priced @ 2/1 and a draw is currently @ 23/10.
We are backing Forest Green to win to nil because they have shown an impressive defensive record in recent weeks, having conceded just two goals in their last five outings. Furthermore, Sutton have the second worst goal scoring record in the league and have only scored one goal in their last three league games.
