Both Gillingham and Newport County are merely aiming to finish as high as possible in the final two games of the season with both sides free from fears of relegation after a solid run of form towards the end of the campaign.
Newport did lose to Harrogate Town in midweek and went two goals down within just nine minutes at home. Omar Bogle soon brought one back and scored later on in the 3-2 loss. It now means Newport come into the game with a 3-1 win over Doncaster last weekend and a narrow victory over Hartlepool United as their only wins in the past five games.
They were also hammered 4-0 by Stockport County and lost 2-1 at Rodney Parade to Mansfield Town just before that. Regardless, Newport have not been sucked into the relegation fight in 2023 and they have managed to create a gap of 14 points on Hartlepool in 23rd.
At the same time, only Harrogate has scored more goals than them in the bottom half of the table this season, as the Exiles have now netted 49 times. Newport will be eyeing up the top 12 in the last two games, as they are now behind Tranmere Rovers by four points.
Gillingham scored a goal in the 97th minute away to Bradford City last time out, as Timothee Dieng scored after 12 minutes with Oliver Hawkins netting in the final few seconds of the game.
