Stockport vs Tranmere Prediction, Tips & Stats

Edgeley Park is playing host to a League Two midtable battle on Saturday afternoon as Tranmere Rovers make the short distance to face Stockport County.

The hosts find themselves inside the top half of the League Two table in 10th place, having picked up 11 wins, 6 draws and 10 defeats from their 27 league games so far this campaign. The Hatters are currently only 3 points off the playoff places and results permitting, a win this weekend could see Stockport enter 7th place.

Dave Challinor’s side are without a win in their last three league outings and have been struggling to find the back of the net in recent weeks. The Hatters had failed to score in their two league games prior to Tuesday night, having recorded a goalless draw against Bradford and a 1-0 defeat at the hands of AFC Wimbledon.

On Tuesday night, the Hatters travelled to face Crewe in the first derby between the local rivals at Gresty Road in more than 11 years. Crewe forged ahead just before the interval when teenager Conor O’Riordan netted his first senior goal but Kyle Wootton hit back for County soon after the restart as the game ended 1-1.

Tranmere currently occupy 13th place in the League Two table, on 38 points, having picked up 10 wins, 8 draws and nine defeats from their 27 league games so far this campaign. A win this weekend could see Tranmere leapfrog Stockport in the table and reach as high as 9th place.

Rovers came into this game high in confidence, having not lost any of their last three and having won three of their last six league outings. Despite finding it hard to score in the early stages of the season, Rovers have found their goalscoring form and have only failed to score on one occasion since the start of December.

Micky Mellon’s side recorded arguably their most impressive result of their campaign last weekend as they recorded a home victory against the league leaders, Leyton Orient. The decisive moment came with eight minutes to play, after Omar Beckles’ own goal proved the difference between the two teams.

It ended in a goalless draw when these sides met earlier in the season in the reverse fixture of this tie. Despite having more possession (56%), shots (12), and corners (8) than Tranmere, Stockport failed to find the back of the net as both sides split the points at Prenton Park.

Stockport are heavily favoured to record a home win in this tie and are currently priced @ 8/11, whilst an away win for Tranmere is priced @ 15/4. Paddy Madden, who is Stockport’s top scorer so far this season with 10 goals is the favourite to score anytime in the game @ 13/8.

We are backing under 1.5 goals @ 2/1 because of these two sides' lack of goals in recent weeks. Stockport have only scored more than one goal in one of their last five games, whilst Tranmere have achieved the feat only twice.

            Stockport Team News

Stockport confirmed the signing of Joe Grayson on loan from Barrow AFC for the remainder of the season. Grayson becomes Stockport's sixth and final signing of the January transfer window.

            Tranmere Team News

Tranmere secured two late loan deals on deadline day as they looked to bring depth into their squad. Jay Turner-Cooke, who has been in around the first team at Newcastle United was signed on loan until the end of the season. Elsewhere, Regan Hendry was also signed on loan until the end of the season, from Forest Green Rovers.
