Sutton United vs Morecambe Preview, Tips & Stats

Sutton United will be aiming to record just their second league win of the season as they are set to host Morecambe on Saturday afternoon.

Sutton are currently at the bottom of the League Two table, having gained just seven points from their opening 3 league outings. The U’s have the worst defensive record in the league, having conceded 30 goals from their opening 13 games.

In Suttons last league game, they recorded a 4-1 loss at the hands of Doncaster. Joe Ironside scored twice, including a first-half penalty, while Zain Westbrooke and Mo Faal also found the net for Grant McCann's side with Harry Smith replying for the visitors in stoppage time.

Morecambe are currently sitting in 12th place in the league two table, having gained 18 points from their 11 league outings. This comes following five wins, three draws and three defeats.

In the Shrimps last league outing, they recorded a 3-1 victory over Colchester despite having 10-men for the majority of the game. The hosts were three goals up by half-time, with goals from Cole Stockton, Arthur Gnahoua, and Rhys Oates. Colchester pulled a goal back through Tom Eastman early in the second half, but Morecambe held on for a comfortable victory.

Sutton United and Morecambe have a relatively short history of meeting, having only played each other 6 times since 1999. However, the two clubs have developed a fierce rivalry in recent years, as they have both been competing in the same league for the past three seasons.

The first meeting between the two clubs came in the 1999/2000 season, when they were both playing in the Conference National. Morecambe won both fixtures that season, with a 6-2 victory at Christie Park followed by a 1-0 away win.

The two clubs did not meet again for over 20 years, until they were both promoted to League Two in the 2020/21 season. Sutton United won the first meeting of the two clubs in League Two, with a 2-1 victory at Gander Green Lane. However, Morecambe got their revenge in the reverse fixture, with a 3-1 win at Christie Park.

In the 2021/22 season, the two clubs drew both of their fixtures against each other, 1-1 at Gander Green Lane and 2-2 at Christie Park. The rivalry between Sutton United and Morecambe has intensified in recent years, as the two clubs have been competing for promotion to League One.

In the 2022/23 season, Sutton United finished third in League Two and qualified for the playoffs, while Morecambe finished sixth and missed out on the playoffs by a single point.
