Newcastle vs Wolves: Preview & Prediction

Newcastle host Wolves in the Premier League, with the home side looking to extend their winning streak and edge closer to the top four.

Date: 15/01/25

Kick-off time: 19:30

Venue: St James’ Park

A top four place is in sight for Newcastle, who have emerged as the in-form side in the Premier League. The Magpies are winners of five league games in a row, and are just one point behind fourth place Chelsea. This run extends to eight consecutive wins in all competitions, and they are also winners of their last five at home. With no Europe this season, they will be desperate to return to Champions League action next year, and with another victory they will remain in a strong position to do so.

It has been a contrasting season for Wolves, who are fighting against relegation. With new manager Vitor Pereira at the helm, the visitors have won two of their last four games, including a victory over Man United and draw at Tottenham. However, they did lose their most recent game at home to Nottingham Forest, which means they sit outside the bottom three only on goal difference.

The hosts’ excellent run of form is down to great success at both ends, particularly going forward. Alexander Isak is the side’s top scorer with 13 goals, which is also third most in the league, only behind Erling Haaland and Mohamed Salah. Eddie Howe’s team have scored at least two goals in each of their last seven league games, and should be confident in doing so once more against a defence which has conceded five in their last two.

At the other end, Newcastle have kept four clean sheets in their last five games, with just one goal allowed against Tottenham. Wolves have improved in attack since the arrival of Pereira, scoring seven in his four league games. They will be boosted by the return of Matheus Cunha from suspension, who leads the club with 10 goals.

These two teams have met 10 times in the Premier League since 2020. Newcastle have been the superior side with four wins to Wolves’ one and five draws. This run started with three consecutive draws, before the visitors’ sole victory. The Magpies are unbeaten in six games since, including two in a row. The reverse fixture earlier this season at Molineux ended 2-1 in Newcastle’s favour as Fabian Schar and Harvey Barnes overturned an early deficit given to them by Mario Lemina.

Where to Watch

Newcastle vs Wolves will be available to watch on TNT Sports 3.

Team News

Newcastle

Alexander Isak has been suffering with a knock, but the expectation is that he will be available. Sven Botman and Joe Willock should also be involved. Fabian Schar and Bruno Guimaraes will return to the lineup following suspension. Nick Pope is nearing a return but this game comes just too soon with the weekend a likelier possibility.

Wolves

Matheus Cunha will be eligible to return after serving a suspension. Craig Dawson, Nelson Semedo and Mario Lemina should also be available for selection. Boubacar Traore is nearing a return at the end of this month after a long-term knee injury. This game may also come too soon for Toti Gomes.

Form Guide

Newcastle:

In their last five games, Newcastle have been perfect, winning all five. It has been a dominant stretch for the Magpies as they battle for European football. This run started with an important fixture against Aston Villa at home. An impressive result saw them win 3-0, with goals from Anthony Gordon, Alexander Isak, and Joelinton. Villa played most of the game with 10 men after Jhon Duran saw red after half an hour.

Next they travelled to Old Trafford, where they won 2-0, with first half goals coming from Isak and Joelinton. They then faced another away day at a big six side as they faced Tottenham. They were 2-1 winners, overturning an early deficit with goals from Gordon and Isak.

Attention shifted to the Carabao Cup semi-final first leg away at Arsenal, and they take a convincing lead home following a 2-0 win. Goals in either half from Isak and Gordon sealed the win. Last time out, they hosted League Two Bromley in the third round of the FA Cup. They were 3-1 winners, despite falling behind to a shock opener. However, they were able to turn it around with goals from Lewis Miley, Gordon and William Osula.

Wolves:

In their last five games, Wolves have won three, drawn one and lost one. It has been a solid stretch for Wolves under new management, and this run started with two consecutive wins. The first was a 3-0 win on the road at Leicester. All three goals came before half-time, with Goncalo Guedes, Rodrigo Gomes and Matheus Cunha all on the scoresheet.

Another huge win followed, as they were 2-0 winners at home to Manchester United. It was goalless at the break, before a Bruno Fernandes red card shifted the game in the hosts’ favour shortly after the restart. Goals from Cunha and Hwang Hee-chan sealed the victory. A trip to Tottenham ended with a positive result as they held Spurs to a 2-2 draw. Both sides squandered a lead, but Jorgen Strand Larsen’s late equaliser ensured the points were shared.

They tasted defeat on home soil against Nottingham Forest, where they were convincingly beaten 3-0. Morgan Gibbs-White, Chris Wood and Taiwo Awoniyi were the goalscorers. At the weekend, they travelled to Bristol City in the third round of the FA Cup. They advanced with a 2-1 win as Rayan Ait-Nouri and Rodrigo Gomes scored.
