6 players who are too good for their current league

After scoring 52 goals and registering 17 assists in 56 games during his 2 year spell at LA Galaxy, it’s evident that Zlatan Ibrahimovic was too good for the MLS as he looks set to return to Europe with various Spanish and Italian teams being interested in him. Ibrahimovic’s time in the MLS got us thinking about other players who are too good for their current league, so we’ve looked at 6 players who we believe are too good for the leagues they currently play in.

Josef Martinez - MLS

Starting off we’ve got Atlanta United striker Josef Martinez who has been fantastic since he arrived in the MLS from Torino back in 2017. The Venezuelan striker has been crucial in Atlanta’s recent success as his 77 goals in 83 games have helped the MLS side win: the MLS Cup, the Eastern Conference, the US Open Cup and the Campeones Cup. Martinez has been named in the MLS Best XI for each season he has been at Atlanta as well as winning the MLS Golden Boot and being named as the MLS most valuable player during the 2018 season.

Carlos Vela - MLS

Staying with the MLS, we’ve got Los Angeles FC forward Carlos Vela who has been at the club since it’s first season back in 2018 and is the clubs all-time top goalscorer with 48 goals in 60 appearances. Despite failing to impress during his time at Arsenal and Real Sociedad, Vela has shown his skill and attacking talent while playing in the MLS and you’d imagine that many clubs will be interested in the player ahead of the January transfer window.

Taison - Ukrainian Premier League

Moving to Europe we’re going for Shakhtar Donetsk’s Taison. It’s baffling that Taison has spent as much time as he has in Ukraine and that nobody has tempted him away considering that he has scored 48 goals and registered 73 assists in 253 games for Shakhtar Donetsk. Despite turning 32 next January, Taison has shown that he is still a useful and talented player who is capable of playing on either wing, as a striker and in attacking midfield. Since the start of the 19/20 season, Taison has scored 6 goals and registered 6 assists in 11 league games for Shakhtar, proving that he has no intention of slowing down as he gets older.

Hakim Ziyech - Eredivisie

After their fantastic 18/19 season where they won the domestic double and reached the semi-finals of the Champions League, some of Ajax’s most talented players left the club, with the likes of Frenkie De Jong joining Barcelona and Matthijs de Ligt joining Juventus. To the surprise of many, however, despite only having a buyout clause of £25m in the summer, Hakim Ziyech has remained at Ajax for the 19/20 season. The Moroccan midfielder who can play down the middle and on either wing has scored 46 and assisted 76 goals in 151 appearances for Ajax possesses fantastic technique and finesse and is capable of delivering almost impossible passes and create chances out of nothing.

Kylian Mbappe - Ligue 1

By far the most high profile player on this list is PSG’s Kylian Mbappe who needs no introduction. Mbappe’s talent is self explanatory as his 69 goals and 36 assists in 98 PSG games has made him one of the most highly sought after players in world football, and considering that he will only be 21 in December, it’s frightening to think how he still has plenty of time to improve (if that’s possible). Despite being one of Europe’s top 5 League, Ligue 1 isn’t the most competitive and difficult league in the world, and given the performances he has made so far, it would be a shame to see Mbappe remain in France for the rest of his career. We can’t be the only ones curious to see how Mbappe would do in the Premier League or La Liga, and with the likes of Real Madrid and Manchester City being linked with the attacker, it might not be too long before it happens.

Erling Braut Haaland - Austrian Football Bundesliga

Finally, we’ve got RB Salzburg’s young Norwegian wonderkid Erling Braut Haaland who has made a big name for himself this season with his fantastic form in the Austrian Football Bundesliga and the Champions League. Despite an impressive time at Norwegian club Molde under Ole Gunnar Solskjær, Haaland announced himself to the world with a first half hat-trick against Genk in the Champions League this season where he became the fourth teenager to score a hat-trick in the Champions League. Haaland didn’t stop there as he has scored 26 goals in 18 appearances for RB Salzburg this season. It’s almost certain that Haaland will be leaving Austria at the end of the season, with the likes of: Manchester United, Juventus, Napoli and Real Madrid all rumoured to being interested in the young striker.
