7 recent iconic moments between Manchester United and Liverpool

Ahead of this weekend’s clash between Manchester United and Liverpool at Old Trafford we thought we’d go on a trip down memory lane and revisit some of the most recent iconic moments to happen in this fixture of the past few years.

Juan Mata’s bicycle kick

Starting off, we’ve got Juan Mata’s spectacular bicycle kick goal. Manchester United’s first trip to Anfield under Louis Van Gaal was one to remember, especially for Juan Mata when he met Angel Di Maria’s through ball with a bicycle kick and beat Simon Mignolet to score his second of the game and help United seal a 2-1 victory over their rivals, with some referring to the game as “Juanfield”.

Gerrard’s red card

A key factor which aided United in their victory at Anfield was Steven Gerrard’s red card. Trailing 1-0 at half-time, Brendan Rodgers decided to bring on Gerrard who started the game on the bench. Gerrard was substituted on during the 46th minute and was sent off just 38 seconds later after stamping on Ander Herrara’s right leg, meaning Liverpool finished the game with 10 men and were beaten 2-1 by their rivals.

Suarez snubs Evra’s handshake

After Patrice Evra accused Luis Suarez of racial abuse in the previous fixture between Liverpool and United, there was more attention focused on how the 2 players would react to each other than there was on the actual game when the corresponding fixture took place at Old Trafford. Before kick-off, Suarez snubbed Evra’s handshake which lead to some players such as Rio Ferdinand to refuse Suarez’s handshake. United ended up winning the game 2-1 thanks to a brace from Wayne Rooney and Evra made sure to rub it in Suarez’s face by celebrating right in front of him at full-time.

Liverpool humiliate United 4-1 at Old Trafford

Despite being solid for United most of the time, whenever Vidic came up against Fernando Torres he seemed to really struggle and this was evident when Liverpool traveled to Old Trafford in 2009 back during the Rafa Benitez days. Despite going 1-0 up thanks to a Cristiano Ronaldo penalty, United suffered an embarrassing 4-1 defeat to Liverpool thanks to goals from: Fernando Torres, Steven Gerrard, Fabio Aurelio and Andrea Dossena, with Vidic receiving a red card midway through the second half.

Gary Neville’s celebration

Gary Neville perfectly demonstrated what this rivalry means to Manchester United and Liverpool fans when United hosted Liverpool at Old Trafford back in 2006. After a late winner from Rio Ferdinand, Neville went absolutely mental and ran over towards the travelling Liverpool fans to celebrate, earning Neville a £5000 fine. Neville later stated “I looked at the faces of all those Liverpool fans who had been singing for 86 minutes, and in that moment, they had no answer. Absolutely no answer. It was one of the best feelings of my life.”

Brendan Rodgers’ Liverpool beat United 3-0 at Old Trafford

The last Liverpool victory at Old Trafford came during Brendan Rodgers’ time in charge when they comfortably beat United 3-0 at Old Trafford. Going into the game, Liverpool were aiming for their first Premier League title and Manchester United boss David Moyes needed a result to keep the pressure off him, unfortunately for Moyes, United never really got into the game and Liverpool won 3-0 thanks to a goal from Luis Suarez and a brace from Steven Gerrard. The defeat pretty much sealed Moyes’ fate as he was sacked a few weeks later

Gerrard kisses the camera

Going back to Liverpool’s 4-1 victory over United, when Gerrard converted his penalty to put Liverpool 2-1 up he famously ran over to one of the TV cameras and kissed it, an iconic scene which is associated with the victory. However, that wasn’t the only time it happened. After going 2-0 down at Old Trafford in 2010 thanks to 2 goals from Dimitar Berbatov, Liverpool found their way back into the match when Steven Gerrard scored a penalty in the 64th minute to make it 2-1. After being awarded a free-kick 5 minutes later, Gerrard stepped up and scored Liverpool’s second to make it 2-2 and celebrated by running up to and kissing the camera for the second time. Unfortunately for Liverpool and Gerrard, Berbatov sealed his hat-trick 14 minutes later to give United the win.
