Our Favourite Goals of the 2020/21 Season so Far

Latest News

Valentino Lazaro: Bayer Leverkusen vs Borussia Monchengladbach – 7th November 2020

The first entry in this list of the best goals in 2020/21 is former Newcastle United loanee Valentino Lazaro, for his incredible scorpion kick in Borussia Monchengladbach’s 4-3 defeat against Bayer Leverkusen at the Bay Arena.

This goal was made following a cross in from German winger Patrick Herrmann from the right-hand side, which saw Lazaro beat Sven Bender to the ball in mid-air, as the Leverkusen defender was about to go in for the header, however, the Austrian produced some world-class improvisation and scorpion kicked the ball into the far left-hand corner of the goal.

As far as early contenders for the Puskas Award go, this is perhaps top of the tree.

Youssef Poulsen: Augsburg vs RB Leipzig – 17th October 2020

Next on the list is a stunning volley by RB Leipzig’s Youssef Poulsen in his side’s 2-0 away win against Augsburg. The scoreline was 1-0, Leipzig coach Julian Nagelsmann subbed the Danish striker on to try and help secure all three points for Die Roten Bullen and the 26-year-old had an immediate impact.

In the 66th minute of the game, met a diagonal ball over the top of Augsburg’s defence by Spanish midfielder and met it sweetly on the volley from a tight angle on the left-hand-side and produced a Marco van Basten-Esque volley into the far top corner on his weaker left foot, which left Bavarian side’s goalkeeper Rafał Gikiewicz no chance, as the strike nearly took the back of the net with it.

James Maddison: Manchester City vs Leicester City – 27th October 2020

James Maddison is the next player on this list having scored Leicester City’s fourth goal in a 5-2 demolition against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium back in October.

This goal came about as Maddison picked up the ball near the left corner of the box, following some neat buildup play between James Justin and Nampalys Mendy, which saw the latter feed the England international who skipped past a challenge from Kyle Walker

The former Norwich man rifled in an unstoppable effort into the top right-hand corner of the goal past Ederson after Eric Garcia allowed him to unleash.

Sebastien Haller: West Ham United vs Crystal palace – 16th December 2020

Ajax striker Sebastien Haller is the second on this list to have scored in the Premier League this season, having done so when he flashed in an acrobatic equaliser in West Ham United’s 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace in mid-December, prior to his move to Holland.

With the Hammers trailing by one goal to nil, the Ivory Coast international thumped in a bicycle kick from around eight yards out, having met a chipped cross from Vladimir Coufal from the right-hand side which was going behind the former Eintracht Frankfurt striker.

It's pretty much the only thing Haller did for the London club, and the question now is, who did it better out of him and Andy Carroll for the club?

Bruno Fernandes: Manchester United vs Istanbul Basaksehir – 24th November 2020

Bruno Fernandes has been Manchester United’s best signing post-Sir Alex Ferguson, having made 50 goal contributions in 56 games since joining the Old Trafford club, however, his strike against Turkish champions Istanbul Basaksehir on matchday four of the UEFA Champions League group stages was up there as one of the best goals he has scored in his career.

A corner from the left-hand side by United full-back Alex Telles was cleared to the edge of the box by a Basaksehir defender straight to Fernandes, who met the ball sweetly on the half volley and caressed the ball sweetly into the top right-hand corner of the goal.

Irvin Cardona: Stade Brestois vs Dijon - 13th September 2020

Stade Brestois forward Irvin Cardona scored one of the most aesthetic volleys you’re most likely to see when he capped off his side’s 2-0 win against Dijon on matchday three of Ligue 1 with a 94th-minute goal.

The French striker met a cross from the right-hand side from Paul Lasne and jumped around three feet in the area, before firing the close-range volley into the roof of the net at the near post whilst still levitating.

It's from just a few yards out, of course, but it's a goal which nearly defies the laws of physics.

Florian Thauvin: Marseille vs Bordeaux – 17th October 2020

Another former Newcastle player in Florian Thauvin makes this list, following a magnificent striker in Les Bleus 3-1 win against Bordeaux at the Orange Velodrome.

The World Cup winner opened the scoring in the game after just five minutes, when he received a pass on the right-hand-side from Japanese defender Hiroki Sakai, before turning around and opening up his body as he curled in a 25-yard strike into the top left-hand corner past Benoit Costil.

Manuel Lanzini: Tottenham Hotspur vs West Ham United – 18th October 2020

If there was ever a time to score a wonder goal, West Ham's Manuel Lanzini arguably chose the best time to do so, as the Hammers were looking to find a late equaliser having pulled the scoreline back to 3-2, following a disastrous first half which saw them trail 3-0 up until the 82nd minute.

The 27-year-old became the hero in the 94th minute of the game when he latched onto Aaron Creswell’s cleared free-kick from the left-wing, which Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg could only prod the ball into the path of the Argentine who hammered a shot from around 30-yards out.

If fans were in the ground, the reaction from the away end would have been a sight to behold, but don't worry, Manuel, we won't forget it.

Antoine Griezmann: Barcelona vs Osasuna - 29th November 2020

Antoine Griezmann is another World up winner that is featuring in this list, having scored a stunning volley in Barcelona’s 4-0 victory against Osasuna late last year.

With the scoreline at 1-0 thanks to a 29th-minute goal by Martin Braithwaite, former Atletico Madrid man Griezmann doubled Barca’s lead just before half-time, as a Jordi Alba cross was cleared from the left-hand side, which the Frenchman met at the edge of the penalty area before hammering in a ferocious volley into the top left-hand corner from the edge of the box.

Riccardo Calafiori: Roma vs Young Boys – 3rd December 2020

18-year-old Italian left-back was playing just his second game in Europe for AS Roma when they met Swiss side Young Boys at the Stadio Olimpico, having previously played in their group stage fixture against Romanian outfit Cluj the previous week.

The Roma youngster had a moment to savour, as he scored his first-ever senior goal just before the hour mark of their 3-1 win against Young Boys in early December, when he rifled in a well-struck left-footed drive from around 30 yards out into the top corner of the goal past David von Ballmoos, following a cleared free-kick from the left-wing.
