Can Werner Bring the Title Back to Chelsea?

Latest News

Werner Joins Chelsea

Frank Lampard has just added more firepower to his Chelsea side by signing Timo Werner from RB Leipzig on a five-year deal.

The 24-year-old has scored 32 goals in all competitions so far this season for the German side and helped them put up a big challenge at the top of the table and get them to third, where they currently sit.

The London side will be looking for Werner to link up with Tammy Abraham next season and make a strike force that will put fear into opposition’s defences.

Lampard's youngsters just got stronger

Lampard has been building a young, talented squad that has got them to 4th in the league and with the average age of just over 25 years old, they have the second youngest average age of any team in the Premier League.

Goalkeeper, Kepa, is currently aged 25 and he has grown in confidence and form over the season so the Blues will be happy with trying to keep the shot-stopper for a few seasons. With goalkeepers being able to play at a good level right through to into their 40’s then Spanish keeper could be playing in London for a while.

Lampard’s defence has also started to look more impressive the more they have played together. Only one of their defenders has clocked over the age of 30 and that is the team captain César Azpilicueta. But being at 30 he is bringing in some experience for the younger players to learn from and has proven himself over the last few seasons in the league and has shown no signs of slowing down. With all the other defenders being under 30, Lampard has the start of building a solid defence that could move further up the league in future years.

The Final piece?

With a midfield built around N’Golo Kante and Jorginho, the league has seen the youngster Mason Mount break onto the scene.

At 21 years old he has even been thrown into the debate to whether he deserves an England place with Jack Grealish and James Maddison and with his 6 goals for the London club this season he has people wondering what heights he could hit in the future. Cristian Pulisic is also a 21-year-old that has started to prove himself in the Premier League with netting five league goals for Chelsea. When those young stars are not hitting top form then Lampard has the firepower of Ross Barkley and Ruben Loftus-Cheek to pick up the reigns if they are needed.

The striker options are the toughest part of Lampard’s weekly choices as he has three experienced and proven attacking threats in Olivier Giroud, Willian and Pedro who have all got their fair share of goals. But with them all being over the age of 30 the Blues will need to look for younger choices to lead the line and last season saw 22-year-old Abraham take over and he has already scored 13 goals in the league.

Next season will see Abraham and Werner joining forces at Stamford Bridge and it could be a scary pairing for the other teams to try and keep at bay. Werner is in fine goalscoring form in the German league and the Chelsea fans will be looking forward to seeing him in the blue shirt next season and scoring the goals to maybe see Chelsea back at the top of the league. Since he is only 24, it looks like he is a big part of the young team that Lampard is building there and a team that could be in the Premier League for a long time.
