Marcos Rojo Overview

Manchester United and Argentina international centre back Marcos Rojo has been placed on the transfer list by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, as the Red Devils are looking to shift the former Sporting Lisbon man’s £80,000 per week salary off their wage bill.

The 30-year-old’s contract runs out in the summer barring United using a trigger clause they have in the Argentine’s deal which can extend Rojo’s contract by a further year. This is the best opportunity that the club have had to get rid of Rojo, as clubs are more likely to sign him for a cheaper fee due to knowledge on the contract situation, as well as the fact the Old Trafford club have tried to sell him in their last three summer transfer windows.

Newcastle United Odds

Newcastle United are the favourites to sign Rojo, at the odds of 4/1. Toon Army manager Steve Bruce has previous in buying former Manchester United centre backs in John O’Shea and Wes Brown for Sunderland back in 2011, and it is well documented that Newcastle are looking for more central defenders, due to the fact that they only have four in their squad, despite often lining up in a 5-4-1 formation. Rojo would be ideal to play as left centre back for the Geordie’s, as left-footed central defenders are a rarity and are very useful to have in a back five, he would also not cost much to sign due to his contract situation as mentioned above, which would suit the likes of Newcastle.

Valencia Odds

Spanish outfit Valencia come in as second-favourites, and this is no surprise, as there have been a whole host of Argentinian’s ply their trade at the Mestalla. Javi Gracia’s side does often have a tendency to sign players who are or have previously been based in Liga NOS too, which means that Rojo does fit the bill as an ex-Sporting Lisbon player, as former Manchester City centre-back Nicolas Otamendi made a name for himself at Valencia prior to his move to the Etihad, as well as Ezequiel Garay who was recently released by the La Liga side so that they could bring in a replacement.

Rojo is priced at 7/1 for a move to Valencia. Please click on this link to claim this bet in your bet slip!

Any MLS Side Odds

The MLS is a destination that could potentially suit Rojo, as the league does tend to bring players over from European clubs who are in the latter stages of their career. There’s also a large number of Argentinian’s that play in the league, such as former international teammate Gonzalo Higuain at Inter Miami, as well as the likes of Ezequiel Barco and Cristian Pavon.

A move to America is priced at 12/1 to happen.

Everton Odds

A move to Everton is also in the reckoning, as Rojo has been linked to a move to Goodison Park which would come as a surprise. In the current financial climate, Rojo would be cheap and the Blues would more than likely look at signing the Argentinian on a short-term deal. The 30-year-old wouldn’t make much sense from a centre back point of view, as Carlo Ancelloti’s side have the likes of Yerry Mina, Michael Keane, Mason Holgate and Ben Godfrey, but they don’t have any experienced cover at left-back where Rojo also plies his trade. Lucas Digne has missed seven league games already this season, which has seen the likes of Godfrey shifted out to left-back which isn’t his natural role, a move for Rojo could also allow summer signing Niels Nkounkou to go out on loan to gain more first-team experience.

Rojo has the odds of 14/1 to move to Goodison Park.

Any Chinese Super League Club Odds

A move to the Chinese Super League is priced at 16/1 for Rojo. This link has mainly been made due to the fact that it has been a very popular move for a lot of South American footballers, such as Carlos Tevez, Nicolas Gaitan and Javier Mascherano who was recently Rojo’s teammate at Estudiantes in Argentina when the Manchester United man was recently sent out on loan at the back end of last season. This isn’t a move to rule out, but with a few more years of playing in a high-quality league still left in the 30-year-old, it would probably be a bit premature to make the move to Asia.

Sheffield United Odds

Relegation strugglers Sheffield United are also in the running to sign the 30-year-old centre back, but unfortunately for the Blades, the odds of 16/1 match their chances of seeing Rojo leave Old Trafford for Bramall Lane, as it is unlikely that the Argentinian will want to join Chris Wilder’s side due to the fact that they have made the worst start a team has ever made in the Premier League, and a return to the Championship looks inevitable.

If Sheffield United are to sign Rojo, it would more likely be on a loan deal, with the move being priced at 16/1.

Burnley Odds

Burnley are set to go into the market for a new centre back, as James Tarkowski has just 18 months left on his current deal at Turf Moor and looks unlikely to sign an extension on his contract. The Lancashire side are set to be taken over in the forthcoming days and could perhaps do with another centre back, as the likes of Kevin Long and Jimmy Dunne struggled early on this season to fill the boots of club captain Ben Mee and Tarkowski. Rojo would be a cheap purchase, although it may be difficult to strike a deal that will subsidise his £80,000 per week wage, meaning that he has the odds of 20/1 to make a move to Burnley.
