With the Premier League being the most competitive football league in the world it has seen some of the all-time great goalscorers. The likes of Alan Shearer, Sergio Aguero and Thierry Henry were all players who managed to score a serious amount of goals during their time in the league.

However, behind every great goalscorer is a great team and in some special cases, there is one special player behind it all. In this article, we'll take a look at the Top 5 players with the most assists in the history of the Premier League.

Ryan Giggs - 162 Assists

Ryan Giggs has had arguably the greatest Premier League career of all time, winning the league title 13 times in the 22 seasons he played in the league, making a staggering 632 appearances for his one and only club Manchester United.

Giggs was already an established player for Man Utd when the Premier League was introduced for the 1992/93 season and at just 19 years old, he started racking up assists early in his career and after just four seasons in the league, he not only racked up 33 assists and 34 goals but also three Premier League titles.

Giggs’ best run of grabbing assists came between the 1999/00 season and the 2004/05 season, where in six seasons, he totalled 62 assists, with his playing style gradually being changed from a flying winger who loved to dribble, to a playmaker with precise and excellent passing range.

Giggs kept producing even into his late thirties, producing 23 assists three seasons between the 2009/10 and 2011/12 seasons, where Giggs was between the ages of 35 and 38, with his last assist in the league coming at 39 years old, bringing his total to 162 assists.

Kevin De Bruyne - 112 Assists

Kevin De Bruyne is the first active player to feature in the top five, with the 32-year-old Manchester City midfielder looking to hunt down Ryan Giggs' record of 162 assists.

Some regard De Bruyne as the best player in the Premier League due to the fact that the Belgian has been a creative machine since moving back to England with City at the start of the 2015/16 season following a fairly anonymous spell with Chelsea from 2012 to 2014 where he made just four league appearances.

De Bruyne has managed to create 112 Premier League assists in 260 appearances while adding 64 goals in that time. Memorably, the Belgian playmaker managed to equal Thierry Henry's 17-year-old record in 2019/20 of creating 20 assists in a single season.

The Belgian international spent the first half of the season injured, however when he made his return he spearheaded Manchester City to an unprecedented fourth league title in a row with ten assists in 14 games.

Cesc Fabregas - 111 Assists

In 11 full seasons between Arsenal and Chelsea, Cesc Fabregas managed to rack up 111 assists to give him the second-highest total in Premier League history, whilst also playing a major role in winning two Premier League titles for Chelsea.

Fabregas started producing in the Premier League at just 17 years old for Arsenal, grabbing 5 assists in his first season in a team that finished 2nd in the league, winning PFA Young Player of the Year.

Quickly his output skyrocketed and between the 2006/07 and 2010/11 seasons, he totaled 60 assists in just five seasons, including a 17 assists season in the 2007/08 season, a total bettered by only five players.

In 2011 Fabregas moved to Barcelona for £30 million, but after three seasons in Catalunya, he returned to London, but this time to play for Chelsea and in his first season back in the league, he reminded everyone of his quality, not only by helping Chelsea win the league, but produce 18 assists in his return season, a total bettered by only three players.

Wayne Rooney - 103 Assists

Despite primarily being known as a goalscorer throughout his career, Rooney still managed to rack up over 100 Premier League assists, with his career in the league starting in a rampant way at just 16 years old and ending at 32 years old, winning five Premier League titles along the way.

Rooney had five Premier League seasons totalling over double-digit assists, whilst also totalling over double-digit goals and in four of those seasons he managed this, he helped Man Utd win the Premier League title.

Rooney is widely regarded as one of, if not the best English player of all time, but his playmaking still gets underrated because of how great of a goalscorer he was, scoring the second most goals in Premier League history, with his ability allowing him during his career to play many different positions, even turning into a central midfielder later in his career.

Frank Lampard - 102 Assists

Frank Lampard had one of the best Premier League careers of all time, starting at 17 years old at West Ham United and ending at 36 years old for Manchester City, with his best years coming at Chelsea, where he achieved many great feats, including three Premier League titles, 429 Premier League appearances, scoring 147 goals and providing 90 assists for the Blues.

Lampard had four seasons totalling double-digit assists in the Premier League, with his first season providing double-digit assists being his best playmaking season of his career, providing 18 assists in the 2004/05 season, helping his side to win their first-ever Premier League title.

For most of Lampard’s career, he was a goalscoring midfielder, but between the 2004/05 and 2009/10 seasons, he added elite playmaking to his great goalscoring, providing 68 assists in six seasons, in the midst of ten straight seasons of scoring double-digit goals in the league.

Dennis Bergkamp - 94 Assists

Dennis Bergkamp is one of the most technically gifted players to grace the Premier League and to go along with his three Premier League medals and 87 goals, he also provided 94 assists in 11 seasons for his one and only Premier League club, Arsenal.

Bergkamp spent his prime years playing at Highbury, providing 50 assists in his first five years with the Gunners, winning the league title in just his third season for the club, whilst going onto not only to become a club legend but also playing a massive role in the Invincible season in 2003/04.

At 35-years-old, Bergkamp was still producing in one of the toughest leagues in the world, scoring 8 goals and providing 12 assists, finishing with his highest assists per 90 minutes ratio in his career at such a late age, which really helped him climb the assist charts to climb to fifth in the charts, despite starting over 30 league games once in his Premier League career.

Other Active Top Assist Makers

Apart from Kevin De Bruyne who already features in the top six, Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder James Milner poses an active threat to the likes of Dennis Bergkamp, having created 89 assists in his Premier League career. This tally means that the 37-year-old sits just five assists behind Steven Gerrard's Premier League career record as well as six short of David Silva - ironically, Milner has played with the likes of De Bruyne, Lampard and Silva at Manchester City.
