Newcastle vs Man City Prediction

Manchester City face a tricky trip to Newcastle, but we are backing them to return home with all three points. Pep Guardiola’s side have been very impressive away from home, winning their last seven away fixtures in the Premier League stretching back to last season. This fixture last year ended 3-2 in City’s favour, with a huge performance from the returning Kevin De Bruyne including a goal and an assist.

City have been very dominant in this fixture in recent years, as they have won four of the previous five meetings. Newcastle have not been victorious against the champions at home in the league since 2019. The Magpies have conceded at least two goals per game at the hands of Man City in their last four meetings. We are expecting this to occur once more with a clean sheet for the visitors – Newcastle 0-2 Man City

Newcastle vs Man City: Preview & Prediction

Newcastle host Manchester City in the Premier League, with both sides looking to get back to winning ways this weekend.

Date: 28/09/24

Kick-off time: 12:30

Venue: St James’ Park

Last Sunday, Man City’s perfect start to the season came to an end as they drew 2-2 with title rivals Arsenal. They were seconds away from losing their unbeaten streak, but a John Stones goal at the death salvaged a point. City played the entire second half against 10-men, but could only come away with a draw in what was a very important early season clash. The result meant they stayed top of the table, but just a point ahead of Liverpool and Aston Villa, and two ahead of Arsenal.

Their hosts, Newcastle, have also enjoyed a strong start, currently sitting in sixth position with 10 points after five games. Whilst their performances have not been entirely convincing, they have gotten the results and will certainly be in contention for the European places. The Magpies were unbeaten in the league until last weekend, when they were defeated 3-1 away at Fulham. They face a very tricky test to ensure they don’t suffer two consecutive defeats.

Much of the headlines on the pitch surrounding City involve Erling Haaland, who has scored in every game so far. The Norwegian has produced a stunning start to the campaign, already scoring 10 goals, including two hat-tricks. This is more goals than all but four clubs have scored. Pep Guardiola was delivered a huge blow with midfielder Rodri set to miss the rest of the season with a serious knee injury, and it remains to be seen how they will deal with the absence of such a key player.

Defensively, they will have the tough task of trying to keep out a talented Newcastle attack. Alexander Isak is the main man up front, but he has started slowly with just one goal so far. Last season, he led the way with 21, the third highest in the league. Harvey Barnes is already over halfway to matching his tally with three goals, giving Eddie Howe another dangerous threat in an attack which also includes Anthony Gordon with Bruno Guimaraes behind. They could cause problems for a City defense who have kept one clean sheet in the league.

Where to Watch

Newcastle vs Man City will be available to watch on TNT Sports 1.

Team News

Newcastle

Manager Eddie Howe should have no new injury concerns to deal with. Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles remain long-term absentees with knee injuries, whilst Callum Wilson is still dealing with an issue with his back. He and Lewis Miley could return in October.

Man City

City were dealt a huge blow when Rodri had to be taken off with what is reported to be an ACL injury, which will likely rule him out for the season. Kevin De Bruyne is a doubt for this weekend after missing the Arsenal fixture. Nathan Ake and Oscar Bobb are longer term absentees.

Form Guide

Newcastle

In their last five games, Newcastle have won two, drawn two and lost one. The Magpies have had a good start to the season, but were defeated in their latest league game. It came away at Fulham as they lost 3-1. Raul Jimenez opened the scoring after just five minutes before Emile Smith-Rowe doubled the hosts’ lead. Harvey Barnes halved the deficit just after the restart, but Reiss Nelson put the game to bed in stoppage time.

This followed a 2-1 victory at Wolves. Goals came from Fabian Schar and Barnes after Mario Lemina had given the home side the lead. This was a repeat of their scoreline against Tottenham in the final game before the international break. Goals from Barnes and Alexander Isak came either side of a Dan Burn own goal.

A 1-1 draw with Bournemouth began this run, with an Anthony Gordon strike cancelling out a Marcus Tavernier opener. Attention then shifted to the EFL Cup, as they faced fellow Premier League side Nottingham Forest. Joe Willock scored in the opening minute of the game, but Jota Silva levelled it to send it to penalties. Newcastle advanced 4-3 on spot-kicks.

Man City

In their last five games, Man City have won three and drawn two. It has been a good start to the season for the Premier League champions. This run started with a 3-1 victory away at West Ham at the end of August. Erling Haaland put his side ahead, but his strike was cancelled out by a Ruben Dias own goal against the run of play. However, Haaland scored once more to restore the lead before completing his hat-trick to put the game to bed late on.

They continued their winning streak with a 2-1 home win against Brentford. They were shocked early as the Bees took the lead after just 22 seconds. Though they were not behind for long as Haaland equalised on the 19th minute mark. He scored again shortly after to complete the turnaround for three points.

The first Champions League action of the campaign followed as they hosted Inter Milan. Defences were on top in this one with the sides playing out a goalless draw. Last weekend, City faced Arsenal in a huge early season top of the table clash. Pep Guardiola’s team salvaged their unbeaten start with a last minute John Stones equaliser in a 2-2 draw. Their most recent game was an EFL Cup tie at home to Watford. They advanced with a 2-1 win with goals from Jeremy Doku and Matheus Nunes.
