World Cup Drama

Tottenham Hotspur failed to complete a signing for the second transfer window in a row the January, making it 12 months since a new feature came in. Since then the club have announced five different opening dates for their new stadium, but all five fell through and the latest update says the 62,000 seater won’t be ready until at least March 2019, leading to further rental of Wembley Stadium.

Since then, Spurs were the most represented club at the 2018 World Cup in Russia with 12 players on show. England reached the semi-final, and the run to the last-four included a penalty shootout win over Colombia where three Spurs players stepped up and scored. The Three Lions eventually bowed out to a Croatia team inspired by Luka Modric.

The North-London club’s talisman Harry Kane won the tournament’s Golden Boot and Kylian Mbappé shot himself into the worldwide limelight after lighting up the stage in Russia in helping France lift the trophy for the second time in their history.

Elsewhere in football

Elsewhere, the past 12 months has seen Cristiano Ronaldo win his third consecutive Champions League title, as Real Madrid beat Liverpool 3-1 in the final in Kiev, before he left to join Italian giants Juventus and he’s already won the Supercoppa Italiana.

Over in Argentina, the Copa Libertadores final was cancelled, then played, then cancelled, then moved to Madrid due to crowd violence and River Plate ran out 3-1 winners over bitter-rivals Boca Juniors at the Santiago Bernabeu to lift the last ever two-leg final of the competition.

In 60 games, Lionel Messi has scored 57 goals in and assisted 28 more in the past 12 months, but that was only enough to see him come fifth in the Ballon d’or listings as Luka Modric took home the Golden Ball, becoming the first player to win that isn’t Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo since Kaka in 2008.

The world’s watching eyes were on London as Prince Harry and Meghan Markle tied the knot in May’s Royal Wedding. A reported figure of 29.19 million viewers tuned in to witness the lovebirds get married.

Banksy's work sold for $1.4M, then promptly self-destructed, and Michy Batshuayi has played for Chelsea, Borussia Dortmund, Valencia and Crystal Palace as well as volleying a ball into his own face via a goalpost when playing for Belgium at the 2018 World Cup.

Although they’re sat in third place and only seven points behind leaders Liverpool, Spurs fans are becoming frustrated at the club’s stubbornness in putting their hand in their pocket. Time is ticking as manager Mauricio Pochettino is a wanted man.

Despite his insistence that he can work with the tools currently provided for him, there is the growing feeling that this Tottenham team has ultimately reached its limit without further additions. The striker situation is tough - who wants to go to Spurs and sit on the bench behind Kane? There are only so many players that would be willing to take a back seat role, and Fernando Llorente is as good as it gets.

But elsewhere, this is a team that has plenty of holes and need for improvement across the park. Can you win a Premier League title with central midfield options of Harry Winks, Moussa Sissoko, Eric Dier and Victor Wanyama? It seems pretty obvious the answer is no.

Spurs could be on the cusp of something special with this spine of Kane, Alli and Eriksen, but they are edging dangerously close to missing their title window altogether if they don't invest and show their top stars they are serious about winning and bringing silverware to the club.
